Quickly On Utah
The Runnin' Utes (18-3, 6-0 MWC) open a two-game western road swing against San Diego State (9-10, 3-3 MWC) on Saturday at 7:07 p.m. (PST) at Cox Arena at Aztec Bowl (12,414) in San Diego. The game will be shown on KJZZ-TV 14 in Salt Lake City and ESPN Full Court, and broadcast on Hot Ticket 700 (KALL-AM) and the Utah Sports Network. Utah is 4-2 on opponents' home courts this season and 6-3 overall away from home.

Utah is ranked in the two major Top 25 polls for the second consecutive week, moving up four spots to No. 21 in the Associated Press poll and three spots to No. 22 and ESPN/USA Today poll. Utah has won 13 consecutive games--tying its longest winning streak in the last six seasons--and 14 of the last 15. During its recent winning streak, Utah has won by an average of 18.5 points per game.

In its only game last weekend, Utah defeated instate rival BYU 72-58 on Monday in Provo, Utah. The weekend before, the Runnin' Utes upended New Mexico (69-58) and Air Force (63-51) in Salt Lake City.

Sophomore center/forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 245) leads the Utes in scoring (20.0 ppg), rebounding (12.0 rpg) and blocked shots (38), and is shooting 64.9 percent from the field. Bogut has 14 double-doubles this season to rank tied for first in the nation. Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) is second in scoring (11.2 ppg), hitting 51.3 percent of his three-point attempts (39-of-76) and 83.8 percent of his free throws. Jackson is also tied for the team lead in assists (3.6 apg). Junior forward Bryant Markson (6-6, 190) is third in scoring (10.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (3.8 rpg). Junior forward/guard Richard Chaney, who has played in the last three games after missing seven with a broken left hand, is fourth on the team in scoring average (10.4 ppg). Junior guard Tim Drisdom (6-3, 203) is the Utes' co-leader in assists (3.6 apg) and has a 2.24 assists to turnover ratio.

As of Feb. 1, the Utes ranked first in the NCAA in field goal percentage (53.9), third in rebound margin (+11.1) and seventh in scoring defense (57.5 ppg). Andrew Bogut was ranked first in rebounding (12.0 rpg), fourth in field goal percentage (64.9) and 22nd in scoring (20.0 ppg).

Scouting The Aztecs
San Diego State is 9-10 overall and in a three-way tie for third place in the Mountain West Conference with a 3-3 record. After winning three of their first four conference games, including road wins at BYU (59-57) and UNLV (81-73), the Aztecs dropped two games on the road last weekend. San Diego State fell to Air Force (62-50) on Saturday and to New Mexico (88-71) on Monday night. The Aztecs are 6-5 at home this season.

Sophomore guard Brandon Heath (6-3, 183) is third in the conference in scoring (18.2 ppg), eighth in free throw percentage (81.3), fourth in assists (4.00 apg) and second in steals (2.16 spg). Sophomore forward Marcus Slaughter (6-8, 223) is fourth in the MWC in scoring (17.5 ppg), second in rebounding (9.1 rpg), sixth in steals (1.37 spg) and seventh in blocked shots (1.21 bpg). Junior center Mohamed Camara (6-10, 265) is 15th in rebounding (4.4 rpg). Junior guard John Sharper (6-0, 195) ranks 14th in the MWC in three-point percentage (35.0, hitting 28-of-80).

The Aztecs rank sixth in the MWC in scoring offense (69.5 ppg), fifth in scoring defense (69.3 ppg), seventh in rebound margin (-2.4 rpg), first in steals (8.53 spg), and seventh in assist/turnover ratio (0.85).

Aztec Head Coach Steve Fisher
Steve Fisher is 79-89 in his sixth season at San Diego State and has a 263-171 career mark in 14 seasons. Before posting a losing record last season (14-16), the Aztecs went 16-14 in 2002-03 and advanced to the second round of the NIT. In 2001-02, Fisher led SDSU to the Mountain West Conference Tournament title and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1984-85. With a 21-12 record, SDSU also posted its highest single-season win total since `84-85.

In his previous college head coaching job, Fisher led Michigan to a 184-82 record (.691), three NCAA Final Fours and eight trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1989-97. He was named the 1992 National Coach of the Year by Basketball Times after leading Michigan's "Fab Five" as freshmen to a 25-9 record and the NCAA title game. As the interim head coach in 1989, he led the Wolverines to a 6-0 record and the NCAA title.

Utah vs. San Diego State Series Notes
? Utah and San Diego State meet for the 56th time on Saturday night. The series dates back to a 98-89 Utah win on Dec. 13, 1975 in Salt Lake City. That was the only game played between the two teams before they became members of the WAC and later the Mountain West Conference.

? The Utes lead the all-time series 46-9 and have won 26 of the last 28.

? Utah has taken the past four meetings in the series, including all three games in 2003-04 and the last game in 2002-03, 76-62, on Feb. 15 in Salt Lake City. Last season, Utah won 65-61 on Feb. 7 in Salt Lake City, 66-53 on March 6 in San Diego, and 75-69 on March 11 in the MWC Tournament.

? The Aztecs snapped Utah's 14-game winning streak in the series with a 58-56 win on Jan. 18, 2003 at Cox Arena. Before then, the Aztecs' last win over Utah was 76-73 on Jan. 22, 1994 in San Diego.

? In regular-season conference play, the Utes have a 40-8 advantage. Since the formation of the MWC in 1999-2000, Utah is 9-1.

? In San Diego, Utah is 17-7. The Utes had won six in a row before falling 58-56 on Jan. 18, 2003. Utah won last season in Cox Arena, 66-53 on March 6.

? Ray Giacoletti is 1-2 against San Diego State. All three of those games took place in San Diego while he was the head coach at Eastern Washington. After Giacoletti's Eagles lost the first meeting 86-58 on Dec. 20, 2001, they won 75-70 on Nov. 23, 2002. Eastern then lost in Giacoletti's final season 79-66 on Dec. 20, 2003.

? Steve Fisher is 3-10 against Utah, including a 1-10 mark while at SDSU.

Last Meeting
Nick Jacobson hit seven three-pointers and had 24 points to help Utah hold off San Diego State 75-69 in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference Tournament last season on March 11.

The third-seeded Utes had 15 turnovers, mostly because of San Diego State's pressure, and had to hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:10 to win.

Aerick Sanders had 18 points before fouling out late for San Diego State, which ended the season with four straight losses. The sixth-seeded Aztecs led 65-62 late and had plenty of chances down the stretch, but couldn't convert.

After the teams traded leads most of the second half, Utah went up 68-67 on a three-point play by Justin Hawkins with 1:47 left. Chris Walton had a chance to put San Diego State back up with a short jumper in the lane, but his shot rimmed out.

Tim Drisdom followed with two free throws at 1:10 to put the Utes up three, then San Diego State's Wesley Stokes lost the ball out of bounds at the other end.

San Diego State forced a long three-point attempt by Jacobson at the other end, but Richard Chaney sneaked in for the rebound and hit two free throws to put Utah up 72-67 with 25 seconds left. Chaney finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Utes opened with a 10-4 run behind a pair of three-pointers by Jacobson and didn't taper off much, hitting 15-of-30 shots to lead 38-37 at halftime.

Jacobson didn't slow down, either. He added three more three-pointers, including one on a four-point play, in the final four minutes of the half to finish with 16 points. Jacobson was 7-of-11 overall from long range.

San Diego State, the Mountain West's worst shooting team, matched Utah almost shot for shot, finishing the first half 16-for-31 and 5-of-11 from three-point range.

Boasting Of Bogut, Utah's Wooden and Naismith Awards Candidate
Sophomore forward Andrew Bogut (7-0, 245) has been named a candidate for the John R. Wooden and Naismith national player of the year awards. Bogut leads the Utes in scoring (20.0 ppg), rebounds (12.0 rpg), blocked shots (38) and steals (24). He is also third in assists (2.48 apg), and is shooting 64.9 percent from the field and 69.7 percent from the free throw line. He has led the Utes in scoring 15 times and rebounding 20 times this season. In an effort to promote Bogut for All-America and national player of the year honors, the University of Utah has launched an official Andrew Bogut website at www.utahutes.com/andrewbogut.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Feb. 1, Bogut was first in rebounds per game (12.0), fourth in field goal percentage (64.9) and 22nd in points per game (20.0).

? Bogut has had double-doubles in 14 of the 21 games this season to rank tied for first in the nation in that category.

? Bogut has scored in double figures in all 21 games this season, bringing his double-figure scoring streak to 23 consecutive games dating back to last season.

? He has thirteen 20-point games this season, bringing his career total to 16. He scored at least 20 points in 12 of the last 14 games, including four in a row.

? His last time out, Bogut had 20 points (7-10 FG, 6-8 FT), nine rebounds, four assists and a career-high tying five blocked shots in 37 minutes against BYU on Monday night.

? In six Mountain West Conference games, Bogut has averaged 19.3 points (ranking 2nd in the MWC) while shooting 69.0 percent from the field (1st), 13.2 rebounds (1st), 2.67 assists (9th) and 2.0 blocked shots (2nd). He is the only player in the league averaging a double-double.

Jackson Back In Action
Senior guard Marc Jackson (6-1, 175) has rejoined the team for his senior year after electing to take off the 2003-04 season. He is the Utes' best three-point shooter, hitting 51.3 percent and making 39-of-76 from beyond the arc. Jackson is second on the team in scoring (11.2 ppg), tied for first in assists (3.62 apg) and third in free throw percentage (83.8). He is also shooting 51.2 percent from the field.

? Jackson has scored in double figures 15 times this season, including the last two games. He has five 20-point games in his career, including two this season.

? In the last 14 games, Jackson has 65 assists and 31 turnovers (2.09 ratio). Jackson established his career-high with 10 assists (and three turnovers) against Wyoming on Jan. 15. He's had at least five assists in 12 games in his career and seven times this season.

? In Mountain West Conference play, Jackson ranks first in assists (5.67 apg) and second in assists/turnover ratio (2.43).

? He had his first double-double with a career-high tying 10 assists (just two turnovers) and 11 points in 39 minutes against Air Force on Jan. 24.

Data On Drisdom
Junior Tim Drisdom (6-3, 203) has been the Utes' starter at point guard the last three seasons, in the lineup for 85 of 87 games. This season, Drisdom is tied for the Utes' lead in assists (3.62 apg) and is first in free throw percentage (85.0). He has a 2.24 assists to turnover ratio, which ranks first in the Mountain West.

? Drisdom scored in double figures for the fourth time this season with 11 points (4-6 FG, 1-3 3FG, 2-3 FT) in 30 minutes against BYU on Monday night.

? He tied his career high with eight assists (just one turnover) against New Mexico on Jan. 22. The last eight games, Drisdom has had 30 assists and 12 turnovers (2.50 ratio).

? Drisdom has had at least five assists in five games this season and 21 times in his career. In addition to eight assists against New Mexico on Jan. 22, he had seven assists against both Washington and Southern Utah.

Notes On Utah's Undefeated Start To MWC Schedule
? Utah is 6-0 in Mountain West Conference play for the third time in six years. No Mountain West Conference team has ever started the conference season 7-0.

? At the mid-way point of the conference schedule, the Utes have had the top mark of 6-1 three times (2000, 2002, 2003) and went on to win at least a share of the regular season championship all three years.

? Utah has outscored its six MWC opponents by an average of 17.2 points per game and outrebounded the opponents by 14.2 boards per contest--which are on pace for league records (no MWC team has ever held a +10 advantage in either category at season's end).

? The Utes are allowing just 53.3 points per game in league games and are on pace to break the league scoring defense mark set last year by Air Force (54.4 ppg allowed).

Utes Tie School's Longest Winning Streak In Six Years
With its win over BYU on Monday night, Utah extended its winning streak to 13 games, which is its longest since the 2001-02 season when the Utes also won 13 in a row from Dec. 8-Feb. 2. The Runnin' Utes had nine-game winning streaks in both 2002-03 and `03-04. The longest winning streak in Utah history is 23 games during the 1998-99 season. Should the Utes defeat San Diego State on Saturday for their 14th consecutive win, it would tie five other streaks as the sixth longest in school history.

Getting Defensive
One of the trademarks of Utah basketball in recent years has been a stifling half-court defense. Since the 1989-90 season, Utah has finished in the top 30 in the nation 12 times in scoring defense, 10 times in rebound margin, eight times in field goal percentage defense and eight times in scoring margin.

? In the NCAA statistical rankings released on Feb. 1, Utah ranked third in rebound margin (+11.1 rpg), seventh in scoring defense (57.5 ppg) and fourth in fewest personal fouls per game (14.2).

? The U. has held each of its last 10 opponents to 60 points or less. During the last 10 games, teams have averaged 52.3 points per game against the Utes while shooting 39.4 percent from the field and 33.8 percent from three-point range. Utah has also held a 35.4 to 20.9 advantage on the boards.

? The Utes have outrebounded the opposition in 18 of the 21 games this season--including the last 13--and had a push in one other game (vs. Stony Brook in the season opener), going 18-1 in those contests.

? Utah has allowed just three opponents to shoot better than 50 percent from the field this season: Washington (53.4 in a loss), Utah State (65.0 in a loss) and Cal Poly (54.5 in a win).

? Utah has not allowed an opponent to score 80 points in 149 consecutive games that have ended in regulation. The last team to score 80 points on the Utes in a 40-minute game was Wyoming (88) on Feb. 28, 2000 in Laramie, Wyo.

Inside The Numbers
Utah is 15-1 when leading at halftime and 18-1 when leading with 5:00 remaining in the second half this season. The U.'s only loss in both of those categories was at Arizona on Dec. 11. ... The Utes have come back to win from a halftime deficit twice (at Colorado State on Jan. 17, trailing 34-30; and at BYU on Jan 31, trailing 29-28) and a tie once (Furman on Nov. 27, tied 24-24) ... Utah is 17-1 when holding opponents to less than 70 points per game this season with its only loss coming to Arizona (67-62) on Dec. 11. Utah is 5-0 when limiting a team to under 50 points. ... The Utes are 11-1 when scoring at least 70 points this season and 5-0 when getting 80 points or more. ... Utah has scored over 90 points twice this year: 98 vs. Montana-Western and 92 vs. Cal Poly.
