COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- University of Utah relief pitcher Josh Cooper has been named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. It is the first career honor for Cooper, who transferred to Utah from Lamar Community College this season.
Cooper, a Pueblo, Colo. native, came on in relief to pick up his first and the Utes' first save of the season in game one of the Utah's three-game series vs. Loyola Marymount last Friday.
Cooper took the mound in the bottom of the sixth with two outs, runners on second and third, and Utah holding on to a 4-3 lead. He struck out A.J. LaMonda, one of the Lions' top hitters and their top RBI producer, to get out of the inning. He went on to strike out four more batters, while giving up just two hits, to pick up the save.
Utah is in action today (Tuesday) at Southern Utah in a doubleheader.
