Utes Go Coast to Coast, Open MWC Action
After spending last weekend within minutes of the east coast in Wilmington, N.C., the University of Utah baseball team jets off to the west coast this weekend. The Utes are off to San Diego State Friday through Sunday to open Mountain West Conference play.
Utah enters the MWC slate with a 6-11 mark. The Utes were swept by UNC-Wilmington last weekend, ending a three-game winning streak.
San Diego State enters this weekend's action with a record of 5-16. But the Aztecs have played some stiff competition. SDSU has faced No. 1 Texas, No. 3 Cal State-Fullerton and No. 24 USC, as well as other national powers.
Utah vs. San Diego State Balls & Strikes
? San Diego State leads the all-time series with Utah by a count of 78-18.
? Utah's last victory over San Diego State came on April 25 of last season. The Utes won that game 9-4.
? The Aztecs have won four straight over Utah. SDSU took five of the seven meetings with the Utes last season, including an 8-0 win in the MWC Tournament.
? Utah hasn't won a conference opener since the inception of the Mountain West Conference. The Utes are 0-5 in league openers, including two losses to SDSU.
? The Utes have won just one league-opening series in the MWC, taking two from New Mexico in 2001.
Scouting San Diego State
San Diego State has played one of the most ambitious schedules in the country. The Aztecs are 5-16, but have faced three teams who are currently ranked nationally.
SDSU opened the season with No. 1-ranked Texas and was swept. The Aztecs then dropped a single game to No. 24 Southern California.
After winning two of its next three, SDSU suffered through a nine-game losing streak. Three of those losses came to traditional power Long Beach State, while one was to No. 3 Cal State-Fullerton.
The Aztecs are coached by former Major League great Tony Gwynn, who was the 2004 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. He had a 20-year career with the San Diego Padres, before retiring in 2001. Gwynn has an overall record of 69-77 in his third season as the Aztecs' head coach.
SDSU is led by James Guerrerro, who is batting .341 with a team-high 11 RBIs. Bruce Billings is the Aztecs' top hurler, with a 1-2 record and 3.72 ERA.
Taking One (or Seven) for the Team
Senior designated hitter/catcher Trevor Eastman leads the Mountain West Conference in one very dubious statistical category. He has been hit by a pitch more times than any other hitter in the conference so far this season.
Eastman has been plunked seven times for an average of once very 2.4 games. He was hit only seven times all of last year.
Lane Leads the Way
Junior relief pitcher Brian Lane leads the Mountain West Conference in two categories.
Lane has the best earned-run average of any hurler in the league at 1.50. He has allowed just three earned runs in 18.0 innings of work.
Speaking of work, one could make a case for Lane as the hardest-working pitcher in the MWC. He has made 11 appearances in 17 games for the Utes. That's two more than the next nearest competitor.
