San Diego, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team continued its spring break trip by clinching a 5-2 victory over Princeton. The match took place at a neutral location in San Diego, Calf.
"Just like the rest of our matches on this trip our team fought very hard today and that extra effort helped us get a win against a very good Princeton team," says Assistant Coach Graeme Cox.
Utah was first to get on the scoreboard by taking the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Nationally ranked (No. 40) Ute duo of Miron Mann and Zach Ganger defeated Josh Burman and Darius Craton (8-5). Tomasz Grzyb and Dan Mascall picked up a (8-4) win over Ted Mabrey and Sratha Saengsuwarn.
Utah held on to some close singles victories to clinch the overall win. At No. 1, Grzyb battled back from a loss in the first set to beat Burman (1-6, 6-4, 6-3). It took Zach Ganger three sets to dispatch his opponent Craton at No. 2 (6-4, 4-6, 7-5). Nick Coutts defeated Hans Plukas (6-7, 6-3, (13-11)) at No. 4 while Jason Yap won in straight set over Shannon Morales (6-4, 6-1) at No. 6.
Coach Cox comments on the win. "Tomasz Grzyb really played like he is capable of. He had a nice win in both singles and doubles, however it was a team first attitude that helped us in the end today."
