Scouting BYU
BYU has won 11 of its last 12 outings and owns a 14-5-1 record this season. The Cougars are 2-1 in Mountain West Conference play, taking two of three at New Mexico last weekend.
BYU is coming off a 13-10 victory over Utah Valley State College Tuesday night in Provo. That game marked the sixth time in 20 games that the Cougars have scored in double figures. BYU is averaging 8.25 runs per game.
The Cougars put together an eight-game winning streak earlier this season. They took the last two of three at Oral Roberts, beat UVSC, swept three from New Mexico State and took a pair from Colorado State-Pueblo during that stretch.
The Cougars are paced by Casey Nelson, who is sporting a gaudy .425 batting average. Nine BYU hitters boast a batting average better than .300. Freshman Sean McNaughton has banged out eight home runs, while Brandon Taylor has seven.
Dave Horlacher is the Cougars' workhorse on the mound. He has tossed 30 innings and is 1-1 with a 3.90 ERA.
Utah Rewind
Utah opened Mountain West Conference play last weekend, taking one of three games at San Diego State.
The Utes dropped a 9-3 decision in the opening game of the series. The contest was tied 1-1 after five innings. But the Aztecs scored eight runs over the next three frames to pull away.
Utah got home runs from Ryan Khoury, Adam Frank and Doug Beck in the second game, leading to a 4-2 Ute victory. Matt Crockett tossed 6 2/3 innings, allowing just two runs to pick up the victory.
In game three, Utah allowed three unearned runs in a 5-3 loss. The Utes trailed 3-2 after 3 1/2 innings, but never led.
Josh Coops Up Opposition
Junior relief pitcher Josh Cooper leads the Mountain West Conference in two categories.
Cooper has the best earned-run average of any hurler in the league at 1.46. He has allowed just four earned runs in 24.2 innings of work.
Cooper also has the lowest opponent batting average of any pitcher in the MWC. Opponents are batting just .229 against him. Cooper has allowed just 22 hits, while striking out 19 and walking four.
Taking One (or 7) for the Team
Senior designated hitter/catcher Trevor Eastman leads the Mountain West Conference in one very dubious statistical category. He has been hit by a pitch more times than any other hitter in the conference so far this season.
Eastman has been plunked seven times for an average of once very 2.9 games. He was hit only seven times all of last year.
