COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Utah sophomore third baseman Jay Brossman was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Week Monday. This is the first career honor Brossman.
Brossman, a Pullman, Wash., product, hit .550 (11-for-20) last week, helping the Utes to a 4-0 record, including a three-game series sweep vs. Air Force. On the week, he hit a home run and four doubles, with 10 RBI and seven runs scored, turning in a slugging percentage of .900 and an on-base percentage of .571 in the process.
Brossman started the week with a 1-for-3, one run scored effort vs. non-conference foe Utah Valley State.
In game the first game against the Falcons Friday, he went 3-for-4, with a double and two runs scored. With the Utes trailing 5-4 in the top of the seventh, Brossman smashed a lead-off double, advanced to third on a balk and crossed home on a sacrifice fly out to tie the score at five apiece as Utah went on to an 8-5 win.
He followed with a 3-for-7 performance in a 22-3 game two win, hitting two more doubles, and knocking in a team season-high six RBI. Brossman concluded the series going 4-for-6, with a home run, four RBI and four runs scored in Utah's 32-4 win. Defensively, he tallied one putout and seven assists from the third base position.
