Utah vs. BYU On the Air
All three games this weekend will be broadcast on area radio stations. Thursday and Friday, the Utes and Cougars will be heard on 960 AM (KOVO) and 1280 AM (KZN) on a tape-delayed basis at 7 p.m. Saturday's game will air live on 960 AM (KOVO) at Noon.
Utah vs. BYU Balls & Strikes
? Thursday's first game of the series with BYU will mark the 284th meeting between the Utes and the Cougars on the diamond.
? BYU leads the all-time series 197-85-1.
? The first-ever game in the series was held in 1895. The game ended in a 0-0 tie and a bench-clearing brawl.
? BYU swept three games from Utah in the first MWC series of the season, back in late March.
? The three games earlier this season were decided by a total of eight runs. Two of those contests (6-5 in game one and 5-3 in game two) were decided by two runs or less.
? The Utes' last victory over BYU was a 10-4 win back on May 26 in last year's Mountain West Conference tournament in Las Vegas.
Scouting BYU
BYU currently holds a one-game lead over UNLV in the Mountain West Conference standings. The Cougars are 12-3 in league action, while UNLV is 11-4.
BYU is 26-10-1 overall this season. The Cougars are enjoying the fourth-best start to a season ever. BYU has put together an eight-game winning streak and two six-game streaks.
The Cougars have split their last six outings and are coming off a 7-4 loss to Utah Valley State. In BYU's most recent MWC series, the Cougars took two out of three from San Diego State at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo. The Aztecs picked up a 10-4 win in the first game of the series. BYU then came from behind to win 13-12 in game two and 18-11 in game three.
Jeff Hiestand is batting .389 to lead the team and is one of 11 Cougars with batting averages better than .300. Brandon Taylor has 12 homers and 48 RBIs to lead the team. Dave Horlacher is BYU's top pitcher, with a 3-2 record and a 3.60 earned-run average.
Brossman All Over the Charts
Utah third baseman Jay Brossman is currently ranked in the top 10 in six of the 10 Mountain West Conference hitting statistics.
Brossman's .370 batting average currently ranks No. 7 in the conference. He ranks No. 8 in hits, doubles, total bases and RBIs. Brossman is also No. 10 in on-base percentage.
Brossman was a first-team all-Mountain West Conference selection as a utility player/DH as a freshman last season.
The Price Is Right
Jason Price continues to be the workhorse of the Utah staff. Price ranks third in the MWC in innngs pitched with 65.2. He is 4th in Ks (50) and tops in Ks looking (23).
Price has gone at least five innings in 10 of his 11 starts and has never allowed more than five earned runs. However, he hasn't gotten much run support. The Utes average 4.27 runs in his starts.
Price has been ahead or had his team within two runs when he left the game in eight of his 11 starts.
