SALT LAKE CITY -
Five players from Utah's 12-0, Mountain West and Fiesta Bowl champion football team were taken in the 2005 NFL Draft, April 23-24. Two Utes--quarterback Alex Smith and defensive lineman Sione Pouha--were picked up on the first day.
Smith, of course, was the first No. 1 draft pick in Utah history, going to the San Francisco `49ers. Pouha was nabbed by the New York Jets in the third round. Other drafted Utes included six-rounder Chris Kemoeatu (Pittsburgh) and seventh-round picks Jonathan Fanene (Cincinnati) and Paris Warren (Tampa Bay).
The five draftees this year ties the most ever in a single year for Utah, equaling a mark seat back in 1982.
Several other Utes expect to sign free agent contracts.
