Boise, Idaho - The Utes, being ranked No. 72 in the nation, played Boise State, ranked No. 28 in the nation, during the semifinals for an amazing 4-3.5 victory. This was a huge win for the Utes. Miron Mann, Ryan Scott, and Wes Hancock all had big wins during singles. Zach Ganger and Miron Mann, with teammates Jason Yap and Tomasz Grzyb, all had victories over Boise in doubles play.
Quote from Assistant Coach Graeme Cox on Boise State: "Our team managed to play some great tennis today and defeat one of the premier teams playing collegiate tennis today in Boise St. We have worked extremely hard as a group to achieve a result like this and we hope that it is a sign of things to come this season. Today's match was played with tremendous spirit from both sides and it is exactly how good college tennis should be played with both teams fighting to the end and the last match providing the outcome of the day. We are lucky to have a team that displays such a strong collective will which helps us tremendously in close match situations."
Although having a great start to the day, the Utes' day ended with an upset during the championship round. Colorado, ranked No. 57 in the nation, went undefeated to end the day for Utah at the ITA Mountain Regional Competition. Nick Coutts and Miron Mann were unable to help the Utes during the championships due to injuries. The Utes hope to have them both up and playing again by next week when playing Utah State and Weber State.
Quote from Cox on Colorado: "We were outplayed by an excellent Colorado team in this evenings match. They are a deep team that forces you to be at the top of your game to play them. It was unfortunate that Nick and Miron were unable to compete for us but we feel in the long run that preventing their injuries from becoming more severe is of greater benefit to the team. The guys who were thrown in out of position performed well and hopefully this experience will be good for them the next time they are forced to have to do the same thing. We have high expectations for everyone on our team and believe that should be able to compete with anybody they play."
