SALT LAKE CITY - Andrew Bogut, the 2004-05 National Player of the Year who led Utah to the NCAA Sweet 16, will be honored with the retirement of his No. 4 jersey when the Runnin' Utes host Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
In honor of Bogut's No. 4 jersey, upper bowl tickets for the game will cost just $4. Tickets are currently on sale at www.UtahTickets.com, by phone at (801) 581-UTIX, or at the Utah Athletics Rice-Eccles Stadium Ticket Office. The first 2,000 fans entering the Huntsman Center that evening will receive a commemorative Andrew Bogut Jersey Pin, courtesy of the University of Utah Alumni Association.
Before the game, Ute head coach Ray Giacoletti will present Bogut as the seventh player in school history to have his jersey retired. Bogut's jersey will be hung from the rafters of the Huntsman Center and a video chronicling his career will be shown at halftime. Bogut's No. 4 jersey will join Billy McGill's No. 12, Arnie Ferrin's No. 22, Danny Vranes' No. 23, Andre Miller's No. 24, Vern Gardner's No. 33 and Keith Van Horn's No. 44 as the only retired jerseys in Runnin' Ute history.
Last season as a sophomore, Bogut was named the consensus National Player of the Year, earning all five awards recognized by the NCAA: John R. Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Associated Press Player of the Year, USBWA Oscar Robertson Trophy, and NABC Division I Player of the Year. Bogut was also voted Utah's sixth consensus All-American all-time and just the third since 1962.
Bogut led the Utes to one of the four winningest seasons in school history with a 29-6 record, the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament, and the Mountain West Conference regular-season championship. He led the nation with 26 double-doubles and closed out his career by scoring in double figures 37 consecutive games dating back to the final two games of his freshman season. Bogut was named the 2005-06 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year after being recognized as the league's Freshman of the Year and second team all-conference in 2003-04.
Bogut ranked 19th in the NCAA in scoring (20.4 ppg), second in rebounding (12.2 rpg), and eighth in field goal percentage (62.0) in 2005-06. Despite playing just two years, Bogut finished his Utah career ranked 27th in scoring (1,126 points), ninth in scoring average (16.6 ppg), 10th in rebounds (753), seventh in rebounding average (11.1 rpg), second in field goal percentage (60.3) and tied for fourth in blocked shots (109).
The Milwaukee Bucks made Bogut the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NBA Draft. He joined McGill (Chicago Zephyrs, 1962) as the only two No. 1 NBA draft picks in school history. Bogut also helped Utah become the first university ever to produce the top selections in both the NBA and NFL drafts in the same year. Ute quarterback Alex Smith went first to the San Francisco 49ers.
"Andrew was the heart and soul of last year's team," said Giacoletti. "For someone who accomplished so much in such a short period of time, I think Andrew is certainly worthy of the honor of having his jersey retired. With all of the various honors Andrew won last year and the recognition he brought to the University of Utah, this is a great way for us to say 'thank you.' "
Bogut is scheduled be at the NBA All-Star Rookie Challenge on Feb. 17 in Houston, then fly to Utah in time for Saturday night's game.
