SALT LAKE CITY - Utah continued its mastery of the Mountain West Conference on Friday night with a convincing 4-0 victory against TCU at Ute Field. It was the eighth consecutive win for the No. 11 Utes, who improved to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in conference action.
The Utes tallied a season-high four goals against the Horned Frogs and remained unscored upon in league play. Adele Letro registered a pair of goals--one coming on a penalty kick--to give her a team-best nine on the season. Amanda Feigt assisted on one of Letro's goals and scored one of her own, while Hailey Marsh also contributed a late goal for the Utes.
Utah dominated TCU (5-8-3, 0-3-2 MWC) with a 24-6 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Mason, who played the first 66 minutes for the Utes, did not face a shot on goal. Freshman Lynzee Lee made four saves the rest of the way. It was the seventh straight shutout for the Utes, who haven't lost in over a month and have achieved their highest ranking ever.
Utah's first goal of the game came on a penalty shot by Letro in the 38th minute. Letro had a breakaway opportunity and was fouled deep on the left side the box. She drilled her penalty kick from 12 yards away.
An exceptional effort by Feigt led the Utes' second goal in the 50th minute. After TCU keeper Katy Buchanan came off her line and mishandled the ball in attempt to coral it, Feigt made an aggressive play to take it away. With mouth of the goal wide open, Feigt turned and arced the ball in from 25 yards out on the right side of the field for her fourth goal of the season.
Feigt then made another nice play, leading to Letro's second goal at the 62:15 mark. Feigt flicked a five-yard pass to Letro on the right side of the box. Letro then one-timed it and sent a 12-yard shot toward the far post. That allowed Feigt to tie the school record with 21 career assists.
With Utah clicking on all cylinders at that point, Melissa Crespo and Marsh hooked up in the 87th minute. Crespo booted a nice long pass ahead to Marsh, who slotted to ball to the right side of the net from 10 yards out.
Michelle Nguyen had all four shots on goal for TCU. She had an excellent look at the frame with roughly 10 minutes remaining, but Lee swallowed up her 10-yard shot to preserve the shutout.
Utah plays its final road game of the regular season at San Diego State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. (PDT). A win would clinch the Mountain West championship for the Utes, who have won four of the last six conference regular-season and tournament titles. Utah concludes the regular season against Wyoming next Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Ute Field.
