SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team ended the first day of their fall opener on Thursday in the U of U Intercollegiate Tournament. Four singles and four doubles teams will advance into the Quarterfinals on Friday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Highlighting singles play for the Utes, Zach Ganger (JR), Jason Smits (FR), Wes Hancock (SO), and Othman Ouariti (FR) will move into the Quarterfinals on Friday.

Playing in the Round of 32, No. 1 seed Ganger competed against Doug Alves of Weber State. The match ended in a 6-1, 6-1 victory for the Ute. Moving into the Round of 16 he faced fellow teammate Ryan Schlachter. The Utes battled eachother through a 6-0, 6-1 victory in favor of Ganger, advancing him into the Quarterfinals to face the No. 8 seed Fabio Mancarella of Weber State.

Smits, the No. 7 seed, began competition by defeating Mike Banks of Utah State 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 32. Anton Leonenko of Montana State stepped up to challenge the Ute in the Round of 16. After the 6-0 domination in the first set, Leonenko was unable to hold Smits down. The Ute took the second set and match with a final score of 6-0, 6-1. Smits will play the No. 3 seed Kyle McDonald of Montana State on Friday.

Hancock, the No. 4 seed, was victorious after a two set battle against Fernando Gallegos of Utah State to earn a 6-3, 6-2 win in the Round of 32. Trevor Thompson of Weber State stepped in to play him in the Round of 16. Hancock took the first set with a 6-0 domination. Thompson tried to answer back in the second set, but the challenge wasn't great enough. The Ute ended the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over the Wildcat. Hancock will face the No. 5 seed, Hannes Schenk of Utah State, in the Quarterfinals.

Newcomer Ouariti, the No. 6 seed, battled hard through all of his matches on Thursday. In the Round of 32, he faced Nate Bellam of Utah State. Ouariti stepped up to play a 6-2, 6-1 victory over the Aggie. Moving into the Round of 16, the Ute battled Dantley Young of Utah State. Ouariti took the first set 6-2, but the Aggie stepped up his game to challenge the Ute in the second set. The two battled back-and-forth until Ouariti took the set and match for a final score of 6-2, 7-6. He will play the No. 2 seed Sascha Kienhe of Weber State on Friday.

In the first round of doubles play, duo Ganger and Smits, the No. 1 seeded duo, teamed up to play Covington and Allred of Weber State. The Ute duo battled for an 8-2 victory over the Wildcats and to advance them into the Quarterfinals to play fellow teammate Hancock and his partner Myles Perkins of Montana State - after the mixed duos 8-6 win over Nate Ballam and Mike Banks of Utah State.

Also in the first round were doubles teams Ouariti and Schlachter, and Timmy Allin and Amit Maharaj. Ouarita and Schlachter faced Hauck and Leonenko of Montana State. The duos battled through a long set that ended with a Utah victory of 9-7. The duo will compete against the No. 4 seeded duo Gallegos and Schenk of Utah State on Friday in the Quarterfinals.

Allin and Maharaj faced Sperry and Young of Utah State for their first round. The Utes stepped up to the challenge to answer with an 8-4 victory over the Aggies. For the Quarterfinals, the duo will compete against the No. 3 seeded duo Kyle McDonald and Igor Vuokovic of Montana State.
