SALT LAKE CITY - - Utah and UNLV have split the last four regular-season and tournament championships in the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes got a leg up on the Rebels in the 2006 title chase Thursday afternoon, getting a 1-0 win in the conference opener for both teams at Ute Field.
Utah, ranked 19th in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, won its fourth straight game to improve to 8-4-0 overall. UNLV fell to 5-7-1.
On a rainy, windy afternoon, Adele Letro scored the game's only goal in the 36th minute before conditions deteriorated. After a light drizzle began to fall late in the first half, the rain picked up considerably in the second half.
Senior goalkeeper Ashley Mason was spectacular for the Utes, making five saves. It was Utah's third consecutive shutout.
Utah outshot UNLV 6-4 in the first half while teams fired six shots in the second half. UNLV keeper Ciera Nero made two saves. The Rebels had a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks, keeping the pressure on the Utes throughout.
Brianna Moore almost scored the first goal of the game for UNLV with 16:10 to play in the first half. She had a wide-open look at the frame and forced a save by Mason.
The Utes then got on the board with Letro finishing what Feigt started. Feigt drove out of a pack of Rebels and dribbled the ball to the middle third. She centered to Letro after crossing the midfield stripe.
Letro then used Feigt on the left side for a give and go. After Feigt centered the ball again, Letro push in and fired a shot from 10 yards away into the lower right corner of the net. It was Letro's fifth goal of the season.
Utah had another scoring chance with 2:25 left in the half. Katy Reineke shook loose and sent a shot across the mouth of the goal that missed wide right.
A Rebel corner kick with 36:25 left in the game set up a header by Tanya Roberts that was denied by Mason.
A foul in the box by UNLV with 20:25 remaining set up a penalty kick by Kiley Jones. She fired high from eight yards away.
UNLV shifted the field quickly. Less than a minute later, Haley Partridge fired a shot from the right side of the field toward the far post. Mason just got a piece of it with her right glove to keep it out of the net. The Utes were able to clear the ensuing corner kick.
Feigt tried to add an insurance goal for the Utes with just under 13 minutes to play, blasting a shot off the bar.
Utah continues Mountain West Conference play on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., hosting rival BYU at Ute Field. The Cougars come into the annual instate battle ranked 15th in the nation.
