SALT LAKE CITY - The No. 16-ranked University of Utah volleyball team (15-2, 7-0 Mountain West) snagged a 3-0 win over TCU here tonight and walked off the court setting a school record with its 13th straight win.
It's the longest winning streak in program history, edging the 12-match streak set back in 2004. TCU falls to 14-6, 3-4, in taking the 30-27, 30-17, 30-14 loss.
"It was a great match," said head coach Beth Launiere. "What I liked about tonight's match was that TCU did some different things to us that we haven't seen a lot of this season. But, as the match went on, we figured out what it was doing and made adjustments. We were able to take away many of TCU's options as the match went on.
"TCU is a good team and it will be a tough match when we have to play it on its court."
Utah overcame a sluggish start that saw it hit a meager .195 (15-7-41) in the first game. Not only did Utah hit below .200, but TCU hit .209 (17-8-43) and had more kills (17-15), digs (17-15) and team blocks (3-0) than the home team.
The Utes rallied, though, hitting .480 (13-1-25) and tallying an impressive 7.5 blocks in the third and final game. Utah finished out-blocking its rivals tonight. 11.5-4. The Utes also ended the match with a .290 hitting percentage.
Leading the offense this evening was the Kathryn Lovell-Airial Salvo tandem. They both checked in with 10 kills each and hit .318 and .308 for the match, respectively.
The offense ran through freshman Sydney Anderson. She dished out 24 assists but chipped in with five kills in hitting .833 (5-0-6) on the night. Anderson had a doube-double with 10 digs.
The defense held the Horned Frog offense to a paltry .000 hitting. After topping out at .209 in game one, TCU hit -.105 (7-11-38) in game two and -.128 (9-14-39) in game three. It was Lori Baird's six blocks that led the Utes and she saw help at the net from Salvo who finished with five.
Connie Dangerfield led from the back row with 11 digs. Anderson's 10 was the only other Ute in double digits.
Leading the Horned Frogs tonight were Lauren Otto and Kourtney Edwads (seven kills each), Nirelle Hampton (25 assists) and Calli Corley (14 digs). Three TCU spikers finished with two total blocks apiece.
The Utes have a short break before returning to Crimson Court to host in-state rival UVSC. That match is on Tuesday, Oct. 10, and will start at 7 p.m.
