Ganger and Smits Advance into the Finals

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah ended the second day of the U of U Intercollegiate Tournament on Friday with the No. 1 seeded duo Zach Ganger and Jason Smits advancing into the Finals.

Ganger and Smits started play on Friday in the Quarterfinals against fellow teammate Wes Hancock and his mixed partner Myles Perkins of Montana State. The Ute duo shut down the match at 8-2 against the mixed duo to advance to the next round. No. 4 seeded duo Fernando Gallegos and Hannes Schenk of Utah State stepped in to play Ganger and Smits in the semifinals. The Ute duo didn't waste time; the two dominated the match 8-1 to move into the Finals of the tournament that will be played on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Ganger will also move into the Finals in the main draw singles play. The No. 1 seeded Ute faced the No. 8 seeded Fabio Mancarella of Weber State in the Quarterfinals on Friday. Ganger shut down the wildcat in two sets for a 6-1, 6-0 win. Moving into the semifinals, the Ute battled the No. 3 seeded Kyle McDonald of Montana State. Ganger continued his flow to battle McDonald for the 6-2, 6-1 win in Utah's favor. The Ute junior will move into the Finals on Saturday against the No. 2 seeded Sascha Kienhe at 10:00 a.m.
