The University of Utah baseball team travels to Davis, Calif. for a matchup with the Aggies of UC Davis this weekend.
First pitch for Friday's game at the Dobbins Baseball Complex is set for 2:30 p.m. PST. Saturday's and Sunday's games are slated for 1 p.m. and Noon, respectively. Utah is 2-4 after taking one game in each of its first two series. The Utes took the final game at New Mexico State and the middle game at Texas-San Antonio. Utah has scored in double figures in both of its victories so far this season.
Utah was 19-36 overall in 2005. The Utes were fifth at 10-20 in the MWC.
Scouting UC Davis
UC Davis is 3-2 on the season. The Aggies opened with wins over Sacramento State and Santa Clara. The Aggies took the final game of a three-game set with No. 13 San Diego on Sunday.
UC Davis will join the Big West Conference when eligible in 2007. The league is made up of Cal-Fullerton, Cal Poly, Cal State-Northridge, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, UC Riverside, Pacific and UC Santa Barbara.
UC Davis was 27-29 last season, playing without conference affiliation. However, the Aggies return eight starters, three pitchers and 21 letterwinners.
The Aggies are coached by Rex Peters, who has a record of 103-70 in his 4th season at UC Davis. He is 351-201 overall.
Ryan's Rippin' It
Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury (West Jordan, Utah) is Utah's top hitter so far this season. He's also among the top hitters in the MWC on the young season.
Khoury is batting .429 to lead Utah and rank No. 4 in the Mountain West Conference.
Khoury ranks second on the team with eight runs batted-in. He leads the team with a .484 on-base percentage and has a team-high three stolen bases.
Both Ends of the Spectrum
Utah is in the top two in nearly every offensive category in the Mountain West Conference statistics. The Utes are tops in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs scored, RBIs, home runs, total bases and walks.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Utes' pitching staff. Utah is near the bottom of the league in many of the pitching statistics. The Utes are sixth (of seven) in earned-run average, fifth in hits allowed, fifth in runs allowed, sixth in walks allowed and last in home runs allowed.
