OGDEN, Utah- The University of Utah track and field team wrapped up their regular season competition Saturday at the Wildcat Tune-Up hosted by Weber State University. Several Ute women performed very well.
"We were able to get the things done that we had intended," said head coach Kyle Kepler. "The field eventers continued to fine-tune some technical aspects while many of the runners tightened up a start or a particular phase of their race."
AJ Roby led the team with a third-place finish in the shot put (42-03.50) and the weight throw (57-11.00). Haley McAllister and Vanessa Mortensen were also top finishers. McAllister finished third in the 55m (7.44). Mortensen came in second in the weight throw (57-10.00), and eighth in the shot put (36-04.00).
Other top finishers for the Utes were Liddy Steele, 3rd in the pole vault (11-11.00) which is a two-inch personal best, and Nikki Mancinelli in the high jump (3rd, 5-05.00). Ashley Patterson ran a lifetime best in the 200m (25.54) and placed second.
"Liddy and Nikki have worked out a few issues in their events and are starting to put everything at the right time," continues coach Kepler. "That is a tremendous race fore Ashley after coming back from a leg injury that forced her out of action a couple weeks ago.
"I really like the way we are competing heading into the conference meet. Our student athletes are fearless and don't back down to anyone. They fight for every place and compete with passion and heart. We'll go to the conference meet and do the best we can in the events that w compete in. I don't doubt that for a minute. What place will that get us? I don't really know, but I think if we have solid meet we will surprise some people and have fun in the process."
