SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team is proud to announce that sophomore Zach Ganger has been named Player of the Week this week for the Mountain West Conference.
After coming off of two big wins in Colorado against ranked players, Ganger, whom is not currently ranked, deserves to be in the spotlight for such an accomplishment.
"Zach lead our team during the tough road trip to Colorado last weekend. He displayed great potential to be someone that the team can count on," says assistant coach Graeme Cox. "To step up and beat two ranked players on back to back days is a fantastic accomplishment any time you can do it. He thoroughly deserves to be the MWC Player of the week this week."
This is what the MWC had to say of the Utes' Ganger:
A sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., Ganger posted a 2-0 mark in singles play and a 1-1 record in doubles competition last week, while helping the Utes split a pair of matches vs. nationally ranked teams. At the No. 2 singles spot, Ganger defeated No. 92 Niklas Persson of 75th-ranked Denver, 7-5, 7-6. Ganger teamed with Nick Coutts in a doubles-point loss to Denver, but the Utes still posted a 4-3 win over the Pioneers. Ganger defeated No. 60 Eric Molnar of 53rd-ranked Colorado at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 7-6, and teamed with Coutts for a doubles victory vs. the Buffaloes.
