Utah Baseball Hosts Portland, New Mexico State Beginning Friday

SALT LAKE CITY -- The University of Utah baseball teams plays its home opener this weekend ... sort of. Weather issues have forced the Utes to move their five-game homestand, which begins Friday, to Cate Field at Salt Lake Community College.
Utah is slated to host Portland University in a three-game set beginning Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Utes and Pilots will continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and wrap it up at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
The Utes are coming off a 5-4, come-from-behind win over BYU in a non-conference tilt Tuesday night at Miller Field in Provo. The Utes scored three runs in the ninth and then held on for the one-run victory. Ryan Khoury has been Utah's most consistent hitter this season, batting .382. John Welsh leads the team with 18 RBIs and four home runs.
On the hill, Eric King has a team-best ERA of 2.86 for the Utes. Josh Cooper is 2-1 on the season and leads Utah with 19 strikeouts.
The Utes enter this weekend's action 8-8. It is the first time Utah has been .500 at this point in the season since 2003.
Portland is currently 3-12 on the season and plays a single game at San Jose State Wednesday before heading to Salt Lake City. The Pilots are paced by Sean Nicol, who is batting .371. Portland's top hurler, Austin Dirkx, has made nine appearances with a 0.53 ERA, a 1-1 record and two saves.
New Mexico State is currently 10-13 and has a three-game series scheduled at BYU prior to the two-game set with Utah. Luke Hopkins is batting .463 with 12 home runs to lead the Aggies at the plate. Meanwhile, Brian Gausman is the top New Mexico State pitcher, sporting a 2-3 record and a 5.62 ERA.
