A Face in the Crowd - Junior hurler Meghan Dyer was featured in the "Faces in the Crowd" section of the March 20th Sports Illustrated. She earned the acclaim after tossing a perfect game against UTEP on Feb. 25, going 3-0 in three appearances that weekend. Dyer was also named the Mountain West Conference's Pitcher of the Week that week.
D Does It - Devina Quintero led the Utes in hitting last weekend. She went 5-for-20 (.250) at the plate and tallied two RBI. One of her two RBI was the game-winner that lifted the Utes past No. 9-ranked Michigan. Quintero also belted out a pair of doubles to up her team-leading total to six for the year. She also finished the weekend tallying a hit in each of her last four games.
Second Wind - The Utes have out-scored their rivals in the first inning, 23-11. While opponents hold the edge in innings two through five, 44-34, Utah gets its second wind in the sixth,17-9. It out-scores the other teams by a cumulative score of 25-15 in innings six through eight.
From the Batting Cage - Utah averages 3.28 runs per game and is 12-2 when it holds opponents to less than two runs ... the Utes have out-hit their opponents in 16 of the 25 games this year ... Utah has hit 12 home runs this year. It is 5-4 in those games. On the flip side, Utah is 10-6 in games where it doesn't homer ... the Utes are 6-3 in one-run games this year ... five of the last seven games were against nationally-ranked opponents. Utah went 1-4 in those games and was out-scored, 14-6 ... the Utes' three-game losing streak at the Judi Garman Classic last weekend was the longest such skid this year.
Recap - The Utes went 3-4 in seven games played in Southern California last weekend.
Utah got it started with 1-0 win in a non-conference game with Fullerton. Jessica Shiery's solo home run and Meghan Dyer's eight-strikeout, five-inning performance lifted the Utes to the one-run victory. Karina Cannon came on in the sixth to get the save.
The Utes then opened up the prestigious Judi Garman Classic against three nationally-ranked teams.
In tournament pool play, Utah dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 14 Oklahoma, a 1-0 loss to No. 24 Fresno State and 3-1 game to No. 6 Alabama. The only two runs over the three games came from the bats of Sharee Fonoti and Devina Quintero. Fonoti homered against Oklahoma while Quintero laid down a suicide squeeze versus Alabama to plate Jackie Wong.
The three-game skid marked the longest losing streak for the Utes this season.
Utah got back on track in bracket play. It got off to a good start with a 4-3 win over Northridge and with a 3-2, eight-inning win over No. 9 Michigan. Utah jumped all over Northridge, taking advantage of three Matador errors in plating all four runs in the first inning. Quintero came through against Michigan, hitting the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to upset the Wolverines.
The Utes advanced to the championship game of the consolation bracket, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Sun Devils.
At the Helm - The University of Utah softball team is under the direction of Interim Co-Head Coaches Marianne Bullis and Kyle Magnusson. This is the first stint as head coach for Bullis and Magnusson. Bullis is in her fourth year on the Ute coaching staff while Magnusson is in his second. A search for a full-time head coach will commence at the end of the season.
Preseason Prognosticators - The Utes were picked to finish fifth in the league, according to the preseason coaches poll. Utah earned eight points, one better than sixth-place New Mexico. Brigham Young's 23 points and three first-place votes were good enough for first. Rounding out the rest of the poll is UNLV (22 points, three first-place nods), San Diego State (16), Colorado State (14), Utah (8) and New Mexico (7).
In the Hole - The Utes host UNLV (March 31) and San Diego State (April 1) in opening up conference play. They return to the road to play UVSC (April 5) and Brigham Young (April 8) before returning home to host Utah State on April 12. All conference games are doubleheaders.
