SALT LAKE CITY - Chris Jones has been promoted to assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Utah after serving as the director of operations the last two years. The announcement came today from Utah head coach Ray Giacoletti.
Jones will fill the staff opening created when former assistant Randy Rahe became the head coach at Weber State University last Thursday.
Following his playing career at Utah in the early `90s, Jones served as the Utes' video coordinator from 1994-97. He was a member of the staff for Ute teams that went to the NCAA second round in 1995, the Sweet 16 in `96 and the Elite Eight in `97. During that time, Utah had an 84-17 overall record and a 45-7 mark in Western Athletic Conference play, winning three regular season championships.
Jones returned to his alma mater when Giacoletti was hired in the spring of 2004, helping the Utes win the 2005 Mountain West title and reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Jones played at Utah for two seasons (1992-94) and was part of the 1992-93 team that won the WAC championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA's. He earned a degree in sociology from the U. in 1994.
Following his initial stint at Utah, Jones coached the Wurthing Bears in London from 1998-99. Jones then returned to the states and worked with former Utah assistant coach Tommy Connor at Champions Athletic Academy for three years. Jones became Connor's assistant coach at Westminster College in Salt Lake City for two years (2002-04). In 2003-04, Westminster advanced to the NAIA National Tournament, was ranked 21st in the nation and won the Frontier Conference championship.
The Salt Lake City native was born on Dec. 30, 1971 and graduated from Judge Memorial High School in 1990. Jones and his wife, Emily, have a son, Rylan (5) and a daughter, Rendi (2).
"Chris has worked extremely hard as a member of our staff the past two years, has done an excellent job in every aspect, and is deserving of this promotion," said Giacoletti. "We're excited to maintain the continuity within our staff, and I think this will be a great fit for everyone involved."
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to continue my coaching career at Utah," said Jones. "Working for Coach Giacoletti has been a great experience, and our staff will continue to work hard to maintain the great tradition of Utah basketball."
