On Deck - The University of Utah softball team (18-10 overall) puts its three-game winning streak on the line this week with five games. First up is a road trip to Utah State (4-19) on Wednesday, March 29. Conference play launches this weekend as well. The Utes host UNLV (13-21) in a conference doubleheader on Friday, March 31, and a doubleheader with San Diego State (15-8) on Saturday, April 1.
The Lineup -
Utah State - Action this week begins at Utah State, losers of four straight. This is the first of two meetings between the in-state rivals. The rivals were to originally meet last Sunday, but that was cancelled due to weather. Amy Schiable is one of two Aggies hitting better than, .300. She leads the team with a .328 average. Heather Straight is their top hurler, going 4-5 in 12 appearances and owning a 4.31 earned-run average.
UNLV - Conference play begins when the Rebels come to town on Friday afternoon. They have lost nine in a row and play five games this week before coming to Salt Lake City. Jaci Hull leads the offense, hitting .400 on the year. The Rebel pitching staff is anchored by Christi Robinson. In 25 appearances, she is 4-8 with a 2.64 earned-run average.
San Diego State - The Aztecs have lost four of their last five and will play two games before coming to Ute Field. Megan McDonald paces the Aztec offense with a .347 batting average and three home runs. The defense begins with Christina Ross. The SDSU hurler is 6-5 on the year and owns a 1.20 earned-run average in 13 appearances.
RBI Factory - Devina Quintero went 3-for-3 with a sacrifice in the 8-5 win over Portland State last weekend. More impressively, though, she recorded four RBI in the game. That was only the second four-RBI game by a Ute this year. The other four-RBI outing came in Utah's loss to Ohio State. It was Quintero again, who went 3-for-4 in plating the four runs against the Buckeyes.
Bagged Me A Homer - Sophomore Sharee Fonoti hit two home runs last weekend. While she's only hitting .189 for the year, she leads the team with five home runs. That's a complete turnaround considering Fonoti hit only one home run in all of 2005.
"Whif-le" Ball - Hurler Meghan Dyer continues to be a force in the circle for Utah. Last weekend, she tossed one game and struck out 11 batters while only walking one. She only needs eight more K's for 100 strikeouts this year. On the season, she has 92 K's to only 19 walks, averaging 4.8 strikeouts per walk. Dyer averages nearly 10 K's (9.9) per game.
Triple Threat - Jackie Wong has stepped it up in her senior season to become one of the premier players in the conference. She leads the Utes with a .441 batting average on 41 hits and owns a .475 on-base percentage. She also ranks in the top three in the conference in those categories. Wong leads the league in batting average, is second in hits and ranks third in on-base percentage.
What a Cannon - Karina Cannon came on in relief against Portland State to pick up her third save of the year. Her three saves leads the Mountain West Conference in that category. But, she's an effective starter too. Cannon has started 12 games this year. She is 7-4 with 68 strikeouts to only 22 walks.
Stellar Bat - Freshman Jessica Shiery had a standout outing in Utah's doubleheader on Saturday. She plated the game-winning RBI in both the 8-5 win over Portland State and in the 3-0 triumph over Harvard. Shiery pushed the game-winning RBI across on a pinch-hit single in the sixth inning against PSU, and also had a two-RBI double in the fifth inning of the Harvard game. Her double against the Crimson broke a scoreless tie. For the weekend, Shiery went 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI.
From the Batting Cage - The Utes have belted 26 doubles in only 28 games this year. Last year, the Utes had 33 doubles in all 50 games ... on the cusp of conference play, Utah has chalked up 18 wins. In 2005, the Utes mustered only 20 wins for the entire year ... Jackie Wong needs to score four more runs for 100 runs scored in her career ... three of Utah's four pitchers picked up saves last weekend ... Utah has won five of its last six games ... the Utes won their first three home games of the season ... Portland State tallied five runs on Utah last weekend. That was the first team to score five or more runs on Utah since the Utes dropped a 7-2 decision to Illinois on Feb. 18 ... of the first 31 games of the year, only three were rained out ... the three home games last weekend ended a streak that saw Utah play 25 straight road games. It went 15-10 in those games away from Salt Lake City.
Recap - The Utes won all three games that it played when they hosted a four-team, round-robin tournament last weekend.
Utah got the weekend started with a 3-2 win over UVSC on Friday. All three runs came in the fourth inning and the Utes tallied the victory thanks to Sharee Fonoti's two-run home run. Karina Cannon got the win and Lindsie Nielsen picked up the save.
The Utes continued their winning ways on Saturday with an 8-5 win over Portland State and a 3-0 victory over Harvard. Devina Quintero's 3-for-3, four-RBI effort helped the Utes tally the win over Portland State while Jessica Shiery's two-RBI double in the fifth inning gave Utah the insurmountable lead over Harvard.
Meghan Dyer chalked up her ninth victory in the PSU win while Nielsen tallied her first against Harvard. Cannon got a save against the Vikings while Sheri Shrock came on in relief for a save against the Crimson.
At the Helm - The University of Utah softball team is under the direction of Interim Co-Head Coaches Marianne Bullis and Kyle Magnusson. This is the first stint as head coach for Bullis and Magnusson. Bullis is in her fourth year on the Ute coaching staff while Magnusson is in his second. A search for a full-time head coach will commence at the end of the season.
Preseason Prognosticators - The Utes were picked to finish fifth in the league, according to the preseason coaches poll. Utah earned eight points, one better than sixth-place New Mexico. Brigham Young's 23 points and three first-place votes were good enough for first. Rounding out the rest of the poll is UNLV (22 points, three first-place nods), San Diego State (16), Colorado State (14), Utah (8) and New Mexico (7).
In the Hole - The Utes return to the road for a pair of in-state games. They play at UVSC on April 5 and jump back into league action with a doubleheader at Brigham Young on April 8. Utah returns home to host Utah State on April 12.
