Utes Travel to SDSU for MWC Series
The University of Utah baseball team gets back into conference play this week. Last week, the Utes were the odd men out on the Mountain West Conference slate and played a four-game series with UVSC.
Utah travels to San Diego for a three-game set with the San Diego State Aztecs, beginning Thursday. The series starts a day earlier than usual, due to the Easter holiday on Sunday.
The Utes enter the series winners in six of their last seven outings. Utah is 17-13 overall and 2-1 in Mountain West play.
San Diego State is 10-26 overall and 4-3 in league action.
Utah Balls & Strikes
? Utah is currently in second place in the Mountain West Conference. The Utes' .667 conference winning percentage trails only TCU (6-1, .857). However, Utah only has three MWC games under its belt, while every other league team has played at least six.
? San Diego State leads the all-time series with Utah by a count of 85-19. The Aztecs won six of seven over the Utes last season.
? Utah has already stolen 36 bases this season, equaling last year's mark.
? Utah ranks No. 15 in the nation in home runs per game (1.17).
King Khoury
Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury (West Jordan, Utah) is the leading hitter in the Mountain West Conference. His .449 batting average also ranks him No. 9 in the nation in the latest NCAA statistical report.
Khoury has at least one base hit in 28 of 30 games this season. He drew two and three walks, respectively, in the two contests when he went hitless.
Khoury leads the Utes in multi-hit games with 16 and multi-RBI games with nine. He is currently working on a six-game hitting streak.
Winning Ways
With 22 games remaining on the schedule, the Utes are just two wins away from matching their win total from all of last season.
That's not even including an 11-4 lead after eight innings in a game with New Mexico that was suspended at the MWC Preseason Tournament.
At their current pace, the Utes would win 30 games this season. That would be the most wins for a Utah baseball team since going 33-26 in 2002.
