On Deck - The University of Utah softball team (26-13 overall, 5-3 Mountain West) gears up for a 10-game, three-week homestand when they host Brigham Young and San Jose State this weekend. The Utes' run through the conference season continues when they host BYU on Saturday, April 22. Weekend action concludes with a non-conference tilt against San Jose State on Sunday, April 23. Both dates are at Ute Field and are scheduled to start at noon.
The Lineup -
Brigham Young - The Utes begin their second turn at round-robin conference play when they host Brigham Young (30-14, 8-2 MWC) on Saturday. The two in-state rivals met only two weeks ago in Provo, Utah, with BYU hanging 3-1 and 4-2 wins on the board. The Cougars enter the week having won seven straight and 10 of their last 11. Andrea Ramirez leads the Cougars with a .396 average and with 11 doubles while Daniella Urincho is BYU's top pitcher (8-5, 1.95 ERA).
San Jose State - Utah and SJSU (18-20 overall) tangle on the softball diamond for the second time this season. The Utes nabbed an 8-0, five-inning win at the UTEP Invitational back in February. The Trojans have won four straight entering this week, and five of their last six. Courtney Lewis' .362 batting average, 10 doubles and five triples lead the team offensively. In the circle, Kelly Harrison leads the way with a 2.64 earned-run average. She is 3-6 this year.
Don't Disrespect the Streak - Four Utes enter action this week with hitting streaks of six or more games. Leading the way is Diana Phillips. The center fielder is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak, only three shy of her career-best 12-gamer that started this season. Jackie Wong, Meghan Crouse and Sharee Fonoti are all riding six-game hitting streaks. The six-gamers are career highs for both Crouse and Fonoti.
To "Di" For - Diana Phillips has returned to form at the plate, leading the team in hitting over the last 10 games. The sophomore is hitting a team-best .485 during that span, belting out 16 hits in 33 at bats. Also of note in the last 10 outings, Phillips leads the team with an on-base percentage of .514 and in stolen bases (7-for-8). Last week alone, Phillips hit .500 (11-for-22) and boosted her season average up from .308 to .341, the second-best average on the team.
Jackie at the Bat - Jackie Wong continues to be the team's standout hitter this season. She is belting out hits at a team- and league-best .443 clip. She leads the team with 58 hits, five triples, a .603 slugging percentage and with a .479 on-base percentage. The second baseman also has a six-game hitting streak, and has a hit in 10 of the last 12 games. The only two games Wong didn't get a hit in were the two conference setbacks to BYU two weeks ago.
A Diaper Dandy - Freshman Jessica Shiery became the team's home run leader this season when she belted her fifth and sixth of the year against Utah State and Colorado State last week. The newcomer passed Sharee Fonoti and her five round-trippers. Moreover, Shiery is now the team's RBI leader. She's responsible for plating 27 runs this season. Her numbers rank her eighth in the league in RBI and ninth in home runs.
Dangerous Duo - The Utes lay claim to one of the top pitching duos in the conference. Starters Karina Cannon and Meghan Dyer boast a combined earned-run average of 2.17, the second lowest in the league. Moreover, Dyer's opponent batting average of .207 ranks second in the MWC while Cannon's .225 average ranks third.
Sweet 16 - The Utes belted out a season-high 16 hits in the 8-1 nightcap victory over Utah State last week. It was the 11th time that Utah has belted out double-digit hits in a single game this year. It is 10-1 in games that it has 10-plus hits. In fact, the Utes have had double-digit hits in three of the last five games and are averaging 11.0 hits per game during that span. For the year, the Utes are averaging 7.4 hits per game.
From the Batting Cage - The National Fastpitch Coach's Association has Utah's RPI at No. 41 in its simulated poll set up to mirror the NCAA's RPI ... the Utes' strength of schedule in the NFCA RPI ranking checks in at No. 53 ... entering action this week, Jackie Wong is the nation's No. 15-ranked hitter with a .443 batting average ... Utah is hitting .325 (13-for-40) with the bases loaded while holding its opponents to a paltry .100 (2-for-20) in the same situation ... the Utes' .325 bases-loaded average dips to .291 when the sacks are empty. For the year, the team is hitting .282 ... 70 of Utah's 136 RBI have come with two outs on the board ... Utah had 58 extra-base hits in 2004. This year, the Utes already have 56.
Recap - The Utes won five of six games last week, sweeping Utah State (3-1, 8-1) and Colorado State (5-4, 7-4) while splitting with New Mexico (2-5, 5-2).
Utah got the week started off with a pair of non-conference wins over Utah State. Jessica Shiery's three-run homer was all Utah needed to win game one, while Utah belted out a season-high 16 hits in the seven-run win in game two.
Utah rallied in the seventh inning of both CSU games to escape with a pair of conference road victories. Staci Hemingway homered in the seventh frame of game one to lift Utah to the one-run victory, while Jackie Wong's bounding ball up the middle sparked a three-run seventh inning for the game-two victory.
The Utes split a pair of conference games at New Mexico. A three-run UNM homer was the difference in the 5-2 Lobo win. Utah rebounded in game two for a three-run win of its own. It tallied 12 hits and took advantage of three Lobo errors in securing the win. The Utes raced out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and extended to 5-0 with a run in the fourth.
Hurler Karina Cannon led the Utes' pitching staff last week. She went 4-0 and turned in a 1.67 earned-run average. She fanned 12 batters to only five walks and scattered 19 hits in 21 innings of work.
At the Helm - The University of Utah softball team is under the direction of Interim Co-Head Coaches Marianne Bullis and Kyle Magnusson. This is the first stint as head coach for Bullis and Magnusson. Bullis is in her fourth year on the Ute coaching staff while Magnusson is in his second. A search for a full-time head coach will commence at the end of the season.
Preseason Prognosticators - The Utes were picked to finish fifth in the league, according to the preseason coaches poll. Utah earned eight points, one better than sixth-place New Mexico. Brigham Young's 23 points and three first-place votes were good enough for first. Rounding out the rest of the poll is UNLV (22 points, three first-place nods), San Diego State (16), Colorado State (14), Utah (8) and New Mexico (7).
In the Hole - The Utes' homestand continues when it hosts New Mexico (April 28), Colorado State (April 29) and New Mexico State (April 30) next weekend. The UNM and CSU games are conference doubleheaders while the NMSU match up is a single non-conference game.
