SAN DIEGO - The University of Utah baseball team came within one inning of finishing the Mountain West Conference Preseason Tournament with a 3-1 record Sunday afternoon. The Utes led New Mexico 11-4 after eight innings, when the game was suspended as both teams needed to catch flights home.
The game will be resumed on April 21 in Albuquerque, prior to an MWC three-game series between the schools.
Utah grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed through the first eight innings of the contest. The Utes led 4-3 after four innings. But they broke the game wide open in the fifth. Utah put five runs on the board in the inning, grabbing a 9-3 advantage.
New Mexico tallied a single run in the bottom of the sixth. But the Utes answered with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth to account for the current score.
Ryan Khoury was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and two RBIs to pace the Utah offense. Jay Brossman and John Welsh also contributed to the Utes performance at the plate, each going 3-for-5. Utah starter Rory James tossed 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Greg Krause came on in relief and worked 4 1/3 innings. He allowed just one run on three New Mexico hits.
The Utes are slated to see action again Tuesday afternoon, hosting Utah Valley State at Ute Field.
