Four Games In The Balance This Weekend
Baseballs could be flying all over Isotopes Park this weekend when the University of Utah and New Mexico baseball teams match up beginning Friday.
The Lobos and Utes are the top hitting teams in the Mountain West Conference. New Mexico comes into the weekend with a team batting average of .326, while Utah is right behind at .320. They are the only two teams in the league hitting better than .300.
Four MWC games will be decided this weekend. Utah led the Lobos 11-4 after the eighth inning of a suspended game at the MWC Preseason Tournament. That game will be completed Saturday afternoon.
Ute Balls & Strikes
? Utah is currently exactly in the middle of the pack in the MWC. The Utes sit at 3-3 and in fourth place, with TCU, New Mexico and San Diego State above them. Below Utah are BYU, UNLV and Air Force.
? New Mexico leads the all-time series with Utah 69-43. The Utes took 4-of-7 from the Lobos last season, including a win in the MWC Tournament.
? Utah ranks 16th -- out of 285 -- in the nation in home runs per game (1.21).
? The Utes are No. 20 in NCAA Division I in slugging percentage (.491).
King Khoury
Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury (West Jordan, Utah) is the leading hitter in the Mountain West Conference. His .426 batting average also ranks him No. 16 in the nation in the latest NCAA statistical report.
Khoury has at least one base hit in 32 of 34 games this season. He drew two and three walks, respectively, in the two contests when he went hitless.
Khoury leads the Utes in multi-hit games with 17 and multi-RBI games with nine. He is currently working on a 10-game hitting streak.
Winning Ways
With at least 20 games remaining on the schedule, the Utes have already matched their win total from all of last season, picking up their 19th win Wednesday against Southern Utah.
That's not even including an 11-4 lead after eight innings in a game with New Mexico that was suspended at the MWC Preseason Tournament. That game will be finished at 2:30 p.m. Saturday
At their current pace, the Utes would win 30 games. That would be the most wins for a Utah baseball team since going 33-26 in 2002. It would be the second 30-win season since 1998.
