Utah Finally Plays at "Home"
The University of Utah baseball team will finally play at the ballpark it calls home this weekend. The Utes will play their first game at Franklin Covey Field for the 2006 season on Friday.
Utah will be hosting UNLV in a three-game Mountain West Conference series. It is the first home action in league play for the Utes this season. First pitch on Friday is slated for 6 p.m., while Saturday's and Sunday's games will each begin at 1 p.m.
The Utes are officially 4-0 at home, having won all their outings at Ute Field -- their secondary home facility. Utah is 5-2 in Salt Lake City, going 1-2 in games moved to Salt Lake Community College earlier this season.
Utah Balls & Strikes
? Utah is currently exactly in the middle of the pack in the MWC. The Utes sit at 4-6 and in fourth place, with TCU, New Mexico and San Diego State above them. Below Utah are BYU, UNLV and Air Force.
? UNLV leads the all-time series with Utah 69-30. The Utes were just 1-6 against the Rebels last season, including a 5-3 loss at the MWC Tourney.
? Utah ranks 14th -- out of 285 teams -- in the nation in home runs per game (1.24).
? The Utes are also No. 14 in NCAA Division I in slugging percentage (.500).
Ryan's Rippin' It
Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury (West Jordan, Utah) is the leading hitter in the Mountain West Conference. His .453 batting average also ranks him No. 8 in the nation in the latest NCAA statistical report.
Khoury has at least one base hit in 37 of 39 games this season. He drew two and three walks, respectively, in the two contests when he went hitless.
Khoury also ranked 18th in the nation in slugging percentage (.748) and 27th in runs per game (1.26) coming into this week's action.
It's Good to Be King
Junior pitcher Eric King (Orem, Utah) has seen some action at the plate lately and with success. The Utes have inserted King into the lineup as the designated hitter on days he isn't pitching over the past few weeks.
King has responded by hitting .500 in 18 at-bats. Four of his nine hits have gone for extra bases, including two home runs. King has driven in six runs in his 20 plate appearances.
On the hill, King has the most starts of any Ute hurler. He is tied for the team lead with three wins.
