Utah Travels to Face League Leaders
The University of Utah baseball team will travel to Fort Worth, Texas this weekend to face the top team in the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes currently sit in fifth place in the seven-team Mountain West Conference. Meanwhile, this weekend's opponent -- the TCU Horned Frogs -- are the first-place team in the league. Utah is 5-8 in MWC action, while TCU comes into the weekend's action at 12-4.
The Utes are coming off a 2-2 week, stopping UVSC Tuesday and dropping two of three to UNLV.
TCU has lost three of its last four, including a 3-0 loss to Dallas Batpist Tuesday.
Utah Balls & Strikes
? Utah is currently two games out of fourth place in the MWC. The Utes sit at 5-8 and in fifth place, with TCU, New Mexico, San Diego State and BYU above them. Below Utah UNLV and Air Force.
? TCU took three meetings between the two teams last season. The Horned Frogs defeated Utah 14-7, 5-4 and 10-0 in a non-conference series in Fort Worth.
? Utah ranks 13th -- out of 285 teams -- in the nation in home runs per game.
? The Utes are also No. 12 in NCAA Division I in slugging percentage (.498).
Ryan's Still Rippin' It
Senior shortstop Ryan Khoury (West Jordan, Utah) is the leading hitter in the Mountain West Conference. His .450 batting average also ranks him No. 6 in the nation in the latest NCAA statistical report.
Khoury has at least one base hit in 40 of 42 games this season. He drew two and three walks, respectively, in the two contests when he went hitless.
Khoury also ranked 16th in the nation in slugging percentage (.749) and 22nd in runs per game (1.26) coming into this week's action.
Cooper's a Trooper
Senior pitcher Josh Cooper (Pueblo, Colo.) suffered through three straight losses in his first three Mountain West Conference contests.
Cooper allowed just seven earned runs in those three starts, compiling a 3.20 earned-run average. The Utes didn't score against San Diego State at the MWC Preseason Tourney. They put just one run up against SDSU and two against New Mexico before Cooper left the games.
He finally got staked to a big lead against UNLV, leading 6-1 when he left. The Utes held on for a 7-5 win and picked up Cooper's first MWC win.
