SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team faced Weber Sate at home on Saturday for a 6-1 win in the Utes' favor.
The Utes started the night on a high note by taking the doubles point. Junior Miron Mann made a come-back Saturday after red-shirting last year due to a shoulder injury. Mann teamed up with junior Zach Ganger at the No. 1 slot to face Sascha Kienhe and Fabio Moncarella from Weber State. The Ute duo, whom used to play together during their freshman year, overtook the Wildcats for an 8-4 victory.
Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin teamed up at the No. 3 slot against David Hintze and Chris Williams. The Ute duo took the match with ease for an 8-2 victory. At the No. 2 slot, the Wildcats gave Utah a run for their money. Othman Ouariti and Jason Smits faced Travis Covington and Mario Schnabl. The duos went point-for-point, but the Utes pulled ahead to take the match 8-7.
The Utes continued their momentum in singles play. Ganger (No.45) started the Utes off with a victory over Kienhe from Weber State. Playing at the No. 1 slot, the Ute took the first set 6-2 over the Wildcat. The match ended prematurely due to Kienhe being injured. Ganger won the match 6-2, 3-1 ret., giving the Utes a 2-0 advantage.
Utah's freshmen played well on the courts against Weber State. Ouariti played at the No. 3 slot to defeat Covington 6-1, 6-1. Smits stepped in at the No. 4 slot to face Schnabl. The Ute ended the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Wildcat.
Allin faced Hintze from Weber State at the No. 5 slot. Hintze put up a good fight in the first set, but was unable to stop Allin. The Ute took the match 6-4, 6-1 over the Wildcat, edging the Utes to 5-0.
After Hancock suffered a tough loss to Moncarella (6-7, 6-0, 10-7), freshman Amit Maharaj stepped in to finish off for the Utes. The Ute faced Williams from Weber State at the No. 6 slot. The two were head to head throughout the first set, but Maharaj stepped up to take it 7-6. Keeping the rhythm going in the second set, the Ute shut down the set and match 7-6, 6-4.
The Utes won the overall match 6-1 over the Wildcats, tallying their season record to 2-0.
Quote from Assistant Coach Graeme Cox:
"We made good progress as a team tonight. There are certain things that we have been working hard on in practice and a lot of those things were executed to some degree tonight. Also it was great to see Miron back on the court after a year out with his injury."
