SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head coach Amy Hogue has announced the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period, marking her first signing class for the Utes.
Joining the team beginning in the 2008-09 season are Hannah Clements (Poway, Calif./Poway HS), Joni Cook (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle HS), Haylee Hoch (Plain City, Utah/Fremont HS), Jasey Jensen (Layton, Utah/Layton HS/SLCC), Brooke Olson (Bluffdale, Utah/Riverton HS/SLCC), Tiare Palauni (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) and Lindsey Palmer (Tooele, Utah/Tooele HS/SLCC).
"I am excited about this recruiting class," Hogue said. "The members of this class will fill major positions for us and will have an immediate impact on our team."
Clements, Cook, Hoch and Palauni will enter Utah as freshmen, while Jensen, Olson and Palmer will transfer from Salt Lake Community College (SLCC).
"I am excited to sign three student-athletes from SLCC," Hogue said. "They have all received great coaching instruction from MaryKay Amicone, who also coached me. Bringing recruits out of SLCC, I know exactly what type of players I will be getting."
Below is a look at each member of the signing class.
Hannah Clements (Outfield/ Poway, Calif./Poway HS)
On Clements: An outfield and infield player at Poway HS ... plays travel ball with the SoCal Breakers ... led team in batting average in 2007 ... Breakers finished 13th at ASA Gold Nationals in 2007 ... also runs cross country at Poway ... an honor roll student ... National Honor Society ... won the Scholastic Excellence Award.
Hogue on Clements: "Hannah is a workhorse who can flat-out hit. She outworked everyone that I watched the entire summer. Hannah got hits off everyone she faced, including some of the top pitchers in the country, and led a strong travel team in batting average. She is the type of kid that goes above and beyond what she is asked to do."
Joni Cook (Pitcher/Eagle, Idaho/Eagle HS)
On Cook: Southern Idaho Conference Player of the Year with Eagle HS in 2006 ... three-time first-team all-state ... had a .028 ERA with 428 strikeouts with only 12 walks in 2007 ... also batted .480 last season ... Eagle is a consistent state title contender ... all-academic team ... plays travel ball with Washington Ladyhawks Gold ... had a .35 ERA in 2007 fall ball ... led the Ladyhawks to a 13th place finish at Gold Nationals in 2006 ... sister Randi pitched at Oklahoma State.
Hogue on Cook: "Joni is an impact pitcher who we have big plans for. Her name crossed my desk the first week I was hired. After I watched her, I realized she was everything I was looking for. What turned my head was the mix of pitches she had and the amount of movement that she puts on the ball. Joni also has a good head on her shoulders. She is one of the most unbelievable athletes I've ever had the chance to recruit."
Haylee Hoch (Infield/Utility/Plain City, Utah/Fremont HS)
On Hoch: All-time Utah high school leader in career home runs (21) ... two-time all-state and all-region player at Fremont HS ... three-time all-area ... led team in home runs the past three seasons, with a season-best of nine ... also led Fremont in RBI's two years ... won state championship as a freshman in 2005 ... plays travel ball with the SoCal Mirage ... sister is Utah assistant Tracee Withers and cousin of fellow signee Jasey Jensen.
Hogue on Hoch: "Haylee can rip it. She is a power hitter who broke her own high school home run record. She plays the entire infield and will probably move into a corner spot for us. Haylee comes from a strong athletic background. Her dad Dave coached with me at SLCC while her sister Tracee played second base for me. It's no wonder she has a great mind for the game."
Jasey Jensen (Infield/Layton, Utah/Layton HS/SLCC)
On Jensen: In her first season at SLCC ... Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year as a senior at Layton HS ... batted .381 with 32 hits, 24 RBI's and 31 runs scored ... Layton had a 21-3 record her senior year, going undefeated (12-0) in the region ... two-time all-state ... two-time all-region ... three-time all-area ... two-time all-county ... academic all-state and all-region ... team captain ... plays travel ball with the Utah Thunderbirds ... Thunderbirds won the 18U state championship from 2006-07 ... also an all-state volleyball player ... cousin of Utah assistant Tracee Withers and fellow signee Haylee Hoch.
Hogue on Jensen: "Jasey is a middle infielder with good hands, quick feet and a great mind. She thinks like a coach, and as a coach, you love to have your best minds playing in the middle. Jasey is extremely competitive and will definitely bring some fire to the team."
Brooke Olson (Catcher/Bluffdale, Utah/Riverton HS/SLCC)
On Olson: In her first season at catcher for SLCC ... four-time all-state at Riverton HS ... four-time first-team all-region ... plays travel ball with the Utah Thunderbirds ... Thunderbirds won the 18U state championship from 2006-07.
Hogue on Olson: "Brooke is a catcher with great presence and outstanding work ethic. She commands attention with her hustle. She bats third or fourth for SLCC, which was ranked 12th in the nation last season. I've watched Brooke for the past five years and have seen her do big things both behind the plate and at the plate. Brooke is a kid of great character, when she commits to something she follows through."
Tiare (Tia) Palauni (Utility/ Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS)
On Palauni: Helped lead Taylorsville to the 2007 state title as the starting shortstop ... all-region and all-state selection ... team MVP ... led Taylorsville with nine doubles, 18 walks and .574 on base percentage in 2006 ... also an all-state basketball player at Taylorsville ... plays travel ball with Bad to the Bone.
Hogue on Palauni: "What impressed me about Tia was her raw athletic talent. She is a coaches dream - a pure athlete. She plays shortstop at Taylorsville but is a versatile player who will make an impact anywhere on the field."
Lindsey Palmer (Pitcher/Utility/Tooele, Utah/Tooele HS/SLCC)
On Palmer: Helped lead SLCC to the Scenic West Conference title and a 12th place ranking in the country ... had a team-best 193 strikeouts with 19 wins in 2007 ... also led the team with 45 RBI's and three triples ... batted .320 with 55 hits ... second-team all-region ... won three high school state championships at Tooele ... Utah's Gatorade Softball Player of the Year in 2006 ... a three-time state MVP and four-time all-state player ... plays travel ball for the Utah Thunderbirds ... Thunderbirds won the 18U state championship from 2006-07.
Hogue on Palmer: "Lindsey is a true competitor. She plays her best against the best and the sky is the limit as to what she can do. She plays in the infield when not on the mound for SLCC and has even seen time in the outfield. We are anxious to see how many ways she can help our team next year."
