SALT LAKE CITY - The Mountain West Conference preseason poll tabbed the University of Utah softball team to finish in fourth place this season.
The San Diego State Aztecs were picked to win the title, garnering five of the six first-place votes and finishing with 25 points. Following the Aztecs were UNLV (19 points), Brigham Young (17 and one first-place nod), Utah (14), Colorado State (10) and New Mexico (5).
"The Mountain West Conference is going to be challenging this year and our team is looking forward to it," said head coach Angie Jacobs. "We finished in third place last season and our goal is build upon the successes that this program experienced in 2006."
The Utes return seven letterwinners, four of which were starters, from last year's 40-21, tournament-championship team. Among the returnees are two-time all-conference center fielder Diana Phillips and starting pitchers Karina Cannon and Meghan Dyer.
The road to the MWC championship will also include televised games. The Utes' road game at BYU on April 27 will air nationally on CSTV.
In addition to CSTV, the Utes will also have the opportunity to be seen on the regional sports network, the mtn. The first-ever regional sports network devoted to a single conference, the mtn. will release its complete softball television schedule in the near future.
