On Deck - The University of Utah softball program's (4-5-1 overall) extended non-conference road trip takes it through El Paso, Texas this weekend. The Utes will participate in the UTEP Invitational where they will play Wisconsin (10 a.m.) and UTEP (noon) on Friday, and Northern Colorado (1:30 p.m.) and Buffalo (6 p.m.) on Saturday. Sunday will begin bracket play for the five-team tourney. All times are CST.
Quoting Head Coach Angie Jacobs:
On the UTEP Invitational: "First of all, we need to make sure that we get our nagging injuries treated before we head down to UTEP. Secondly, We need to work on our mindset and the approach that our athletes take at the plate. I don't think that it's where it needs to be right now, but I definitely saw improvement in that area from the first to second weekends. It's just a matter of ironing out the wrinkles. We need to make sure that our batters are correctly identifying the situations and reacting to them accordingly.
"I think that our pitching staff has been doing very well these first two weeks. We need to work on our consistency but, overall, I'm pleased with what I have seen from our pitchers so far this season."
On Last Week: "Overall, I thought that our pitching was outstanding last weekend. All three of our pitchers did very well. It was also nice to see Hailey Davenport gain confidence at the plate and to see Staci Hemingway be aggressive with the bat as well.
"We finished last weekend strong. We'll take what we've learned here into practice this week and build upon it for the weekend in El Paso."
All "Hail-ey" Davenport - Hailey Davenport ended the weekend with a solid performance at the plate. In the last two games of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, the sophomore infielder belted three home runs. She had solo shots against Hawaii and Seton Hall, and also had a two-run round-tripper against SHU. She had four of the team's 19 RBI last weekend, accounting for 21 percent of the team's effort in that category. Those were the second, third and fourth homers of Davenport's young career.
Way To Go, Slugger - Hailey Davenport has a total of seven hits this season. Five of those hits have gone for extra bases. She has a double and four home runs to her credit this season. Those numbers add up to total an eye-popping .952 slugging percentage. She is currently second on the team in hitting, collecting hits at a .333 clip.
Foe-miliar Faces - Head coach Angie Jacobs will see a familiar rival across the diamond this weekend. On Saturday, her Utes will play Mid-American Conference member University at Buffalo, a team Jacobs saw the previous eight years as head coach of Miami University (also a MAC member). In fact, this isn't the only MAC rival Jacobs will reacquaint herself with this season. She faces Central Michigan on March 4 and her former team, Miami, on March 16.
The Windy City - In 10 games this season, Ute hurlers have already whiffed 91 opponent batters (as opposed to 54 by opposing pitchers). Senior hurler Meghan Dyer has been a big part of that. She has as many K's as her 10 counterparts combined (54), accounting for 59 percent of the team's strikeouts. She is averaging 11.7 per game.
So, What's New? - Of the three Utes that hit better than .300 over the five games last weekend, two of them were newcomers. JUCO transfer Kristie Keller led the team in hitting last weekend, belting hits at a .357 (5-for-14) clip. Freshman Tori Medina was third in hitting last weekend. She hit .316 (5-for-16) over the five-game span.
The Right Way, the Wrong Way, the "Hemingway" - Staci Hemingway has stepped up her role on the team this season. The redshirt sophomore leads the team in hitting (.379), hits (11), on base percentage (.486) and, at shortstop, owns the best fielding percentage (.961) among Utah infielders. Last weekend, Hemingway led the team in on base percentage (.500) and hit .273.
"Cannon-ized" - Senior pitcher Karina Cannon was in top form last weekend. She tossed 12 innings in three appearances. Cannon turned in a 2.21 earned-run average and held rival batters to just .245 hitting. But most impressive was her five-inning performance in the 10-0 win over Seton Hall. She threw all five innings and allowed only two hits. She fanned a career-high 10 batters, facing a total of 18.
Balls and Strikes - Utah is 1-4 versus teams mentioned in the national poll. It beat then-No. 17 Texas, 5-4, and lost to then-No. 8 Stanford, 5-2, and then-No. 13 Texas A&M, 10-3. Both Oregon and Hawaii were receiving votes in the national rankings and topped Utah, 6-0 and 3-1, respectively ... the Utes are 1-0 in extra-inning games. They beat No. 17 Texas in 10 innings, 5-4 ... ... Tori Medina is a team-best 3-for-4 when she leads the inning off this season. In all, Utah's leadoff hitter reaches at a .358 (24-for-67) clip ... Haili Squire saw her first collegiate action last weekend. She came on in relief against Florida International and fanned four of the eight batters faced, allowing only one hit ... 17 of the team's 37 RBI this year have been with two outs on the board ... Utah's batting average of .253 jumps up 10 points (.263) with runners in scoring position ... the Utes are 4-1-1 when they score more than three runs. But, they are 0-4 when they score two or fewer.
Scouting the Opponents - Wisconsin (3-2 overall) had last weekend off, but enters this weekend on a two-game slide. It lost to Arizona and Arizona State, both of which are nationally ranked, in the first weekend of play. Host UTEP is 7-3 on the year while both Northern Colorado (1-9) and Buffalo (0-5) have struggled in the early going.
Last Week - Utah went 2-3 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. It topped Florida International, 8-1, and Seton Hall, 10-0 (5), but fell to Oklahoma State, 2-1, Oregon, 6-0, and Hawaii, 3-1.
Day one saw Utah fall to Oklahoma State and top Florida International. Kelly Matthews' RBI bunt in the fifth inning was all Utah had against OSU. Utah couldn't counter two Cowgirl RBI singles. Diana Phillips' three-run homer in the fifth put the game out of reach versus Florida International as Utah ran away with the seven-run win.
All Oregon needed was its solo home run in the second as it shut out Utah, 6-0. Hawaii benefitted from two homers of its own, but surrendered a solo shot to Hailey Davenport in the sixth to account for Utah's only run.
A home run from Staci Hemingway and two from Hailey Davenport powered the Utes past Seton Hall on the final day. Karina Cannon chalked up her first win of the year, yielding only two hits and fanning a career-high 10 batters.
Air Time - Select Mountain West Conference softball games will be televised on either CSTV or the mtn. this year. Utah's game at BYU (April 27) will air on CSTV while Utah's doubleheader at UNLV on April 5 will be seen on the mtn. Live Internet radio and gametracker will also be available for all home games on Utah's Web site, www.utahutes.com.
In the Hole - The Utes play in the USF Louisville Slugger Tourney in Tampa, Fla. (March 2-4) to play Auburn, New Mexico State, South Florida, Maryland and Central Michigan.
