Utah at UC Irvine This Weekend
The University of Utah baseball team continues its season-opening, 16-game road trip this weekend. This week, the Utes head for California once again. Utah will play a three-game set at UC Irvine Friday-Sunday.
Utah enters this weekend with a 2-8 record. The Utes were swept by San Jose State last weekend and also dropped a contest at Santa Clara on Monday. UC Irvine is currently 7-2-1. The Anteaters defeated USC 6-3 on Tuesday. UCI has now won four in a row and hasn't lost in seven straight, when a 15-15 tie against Loyola Marymount is included in its record.
This is Utah's third and final trip to California of the season. The Utes are 0-7 in the Golden State this season. Utah does not play at San Diego State this season, hosting the Aztecs in April.
Leading Off ...
? Ten of Utah's first 13 games will be played in the state of California. This weekend's trip is the last trip to The Golden State this season.
? Two Utah pitchers -- Geoff Wolfgramm and Brad DeVore -- have still yet to allow a run this season.
? Of 12 Utah pitchers, six have an earned-run average of less than 5.00.
? The series win against New Mexico State two weeks ago was Utah's earliest series victory since the 2003 season.
? The Utes were the best fielding team in the Mountain West Conference last season with a .970 mark. Utah is currently fielding at a .957 clip.
It's Good to Be King
Lefty Eric King (Sr., Orem, Utah) has been the most reliable pitcher on the Utah staff so far this season. King has started three games and has an earned-run average of just 1.76. He has tossed a team-high 15 1/3 innings. King also has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 16-5. He has a 1-1 record and holds the only victory by a Utah starter this season.
