COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah senior Jay Brossman and New Mexico junior left-hander Bobby LaFromboise have been named Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is the second career weekly award for both recipients.
Brossman had nine hits in 18 at-bats (.500) over four games last week, helping Utah to a 3-1 record, including a 2-1 mark vs. New Mexico. He had at least two hits in all four games, while putting together a slugging percentage of 1.111.
In a non-conference game against intrastate and conference rival BYU, Brossman went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. In the decisive eighth inning, he ripped a RBI triple to cap a four-run inning and give the Utes an 8-4 win.
In the opening game of the New Mexico series, Brossman's solo homer gave Utah its only run in a 9-1 loss. He went 3-for-4 in the losing effort. In a 12-8 game two victory, Brossman went 2-for-5 with his second solo home run of the series and two runs scored. He followed with another 2-for-5 performance as the Utes wrapped up the series with an 11-9 win. Brossman knocked in two runs via a second-inning RBI single and a seventh-inning solo home run, and also scored two runs of his own.
Defensively, Brossman had 40 putouts and three assists for the week, while committing no errors.
LaFromboise, a Downey, Calif., native, collected his fourth victory of the season in New Mexico's 9-1 series-opening win over conference foe Utah. In 8.0 innings of work, he gave up four hits and one earned run, while striking out six and walking none. This performances marks the fifth time in eight appearances on the season that LaFromboise has given up one run or less. The Utes batted only .148 with LaFromboise on the mound.
