SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The University of Utah men's tennis started conference play on Friday, competing against the TCU Horned Frogs for a 2-5 loss.
The doubles competition got underway at 2:00 p.m. PST at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Utes struggled in the doubles competition against the Horned Frogs on Friday. No. 23 Kriegler Brink and Cosmin Cotet defeated Zach Ganger and Miron Mann 8-2 at the No. 2 slot, followed by Radu Barbu and Andrew Ulrich from TCU taking Jason Smits and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti 8-5 at the No. 2 slot.
Stepping up for the Utes at the No. 3 slot was Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin. The Ute duo faced Christopher Biro and Stuart Row from TCU for an 8-4 victory. Although it was a big win, it was too little too late, as the Horned Frogs took the doubles point and the advantage as the teams headed into singles play.
Singles play was a bit of a ride for the Utes as well. At the top spot, No. 51 Ganger fell to No. 106 Cosmin Cotet 6-1, 6-2. At the No. 4 slot, Smits was defeated by Radu Barbu 6-4, 6-1, followed by a loss at the No. 2 slot where TCU's Christopher Biro defeated Mann 6-1, 7-6.
With the overall score already at 4-0, Hancock stepped in at the No. 3 slot for the Utes to face Kriegler Brink. After escaping in the first set with a 7-6 win, the Ute sophomore continued his game to take the second set and match for a 7-6, 6-3 win over the Horned Frog to give the Utes a point.
The last two on the courts were freshmen Zerouali-Ouariti and Allin, who were both in three-set battles. Zerouali-Ouariti took the first set 6-1, but his opponent, Andrew Ulrich, answered right back with a 6-4 win in the second set. The Ute didn't let the loss in the second set get to him, as he shut down Ulrich in the third set to take the match 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
Finishing out the competition, Allin battled Stuart Row at the No. 6 slot. Row took the first set 6-4, followed by a powerful 6-1 win by Allin in the second set. The Ute battled hard into the third set, but couldn't keep the Horned Frog under control. Row took the match 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 giving TCU a 5-2 win over the Utes.
