Four-Game Homestand This Week
The University of Utah baseball team will play four games at home this week. The Utes host Southern Utah at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ute Field. Utah then moves to Franklin Covey Field for a three-game set with San Diego State over the weekend.
Utah enters this week's action with a 13-18 overall record and a 3-3 mark in Mountain West Conference play. The Utes are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Utah Valley State Saturday. Utah has won nine of its last 12 outings.
Southern Utah is 4-28 overall. The Thunderbirds have lost 13 of their last 14 outings. One of SUU's wins came over Utah in early March, when the Utes took two of three in Cedar City.
San Diego State is currently 21-14 and 6-2 in the MWC. The Aztecs face Loyola Marymount Tuesday before coming to Utah.
Leading Off ...
? Utah ranks No. 2 in the MWC in on-base percentage (.390).
? The Ute pitching staff has allowed just 124 walks this season, which is the third-lowest total in the MWC.
? Utah had two long hitting streaks end last week. Jay Brossman (15 games) and Corey Shimada (13 games) both saw streaks end in the UVSC series.
? The Utes were the best fielding team in the Mountain West Conference last season with a .970 mark. Utah is currently fielding at just a .947 clip.
? Utah's Eric King and SDSU's Donnie Hume, who will both pitch this weekend, are the only regular MWC pitchers who have yet to allow a home run.
It's Good to Be King
Starting pitcher Eric King (Sr., Orem, Utah) got a chance to rest his left arm last week. However, he is still the holder of the lowest ERA (2.79) in the Mountain West. King was strong in his last outing against UNLV, going 6 1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits. He is the Utes' leader in earned-run average (2.79), wins (three), innings pitched (42.0), strikeouts (32) and opponent batting average (.242). He has not allowed a home run this season.
