COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Utah senior right-hander Brett Bruneel has been named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. TCU junior outfielder Clint Arnold was named Player of the Week. Both were honored for the first time in their respective careers.
Bruneel, a Stockton, Calif., native, picked up a save and a win in three appearances last week. In his first appearance vs. Southern Utah, he took the mound in the ninth inning, striking out two while giving up one hit in Utah's 9-2 win.
In the second game of a three-game series vs. San Diego State, Bruneel came on in the eighth inning with one runner on and a 5-2 lead. After giving up two runs in the inning, he settled down to hold the Aztecs scoreless in the final inning to pick up the save.
In Sunday's win over SDSU, Bruneel retired the side in order in the ninth in an 8-8 game. The Utes scored in the bottom of the ninth to give Bruneel his third win of the season. On the week, he struck out four, while scattering four hits and giving up one earned run in 4.0 innings on the mound.
Arnold helped the Horned Frogs to a 4-0 record on the week, including a three-game sweep over conference-foe UNLV. He began the week with a 1-for-3 performance in a 6-3 win over non-conference opponent Baylor.
