On Deck - The University of Utah softball program (20-17-1, 1-5 Mountain West) continues its homestand with four games at Ute Field this week. First up on the docket is a doubleheader with New Mexico on Thursday. Game time is set for 2 p.m. That is followed by a pair of single games against Colorado State on Friday and Saturday. Those two games are slated to begin at 4 and 1 p.m., respectively. Utah enters action this week having lost two of its last three games.
Quoting Head Coach Angie Jacobs:
On The Games This Week: "Our goal for this weekend is to get back on track, both offensively and defensively. We had a great practice on Tuesday afternoon and I think we were able to resolve a lot of the issues we were having at the plate. We are ready to go back out in front of our fans and our community and do what we do best, and that's play Utah softball."
She's to "Di" For - Since conference season started two weeks ago, Utah's batting average has been .209. It has been the bat of Diana Phillips that has provided a bulk of the offense. She has nine of the team's 36 hits and is hitting a team-best .429 in conference tilts. A two-time all-conference center fielder, Phillips continues to get better with experience. She is hitting .414 this season but has bumped her average up 15 points since league play began. For her career, Phillips smacks the ball around the park at a .353 clip.
No Free Passes Here, Buddy - Ute hurler Meghan Dyer has appeared in all six conference games for the Utes. Despite going 1-4 in those games, she still continues to shine on the stat sheet. She has fanned 48 opponent batters in 35 innings of work, averaging 9.6 K's per game. Compare that number to just four walks. Last weekend, she had 17 K's, including a 12-K performance in the first game against Brigham Young. Her career total is now 439 K's which ranks No. 4 all-time in Utah's career annals. She needs 57 more strikeouts to pass Janet Womack (1989-92) who had 495 career whiffs.
Davenport Goes Deep, Again - Hailey Davenport hit her 12th home run of the season last weekend. Davenport has hit two of the team's last three home runs, hitting round-trippers against UNLV (4/5) and Brigham Young (4/14). The sophomore catcher has come a long way since hitting .186 in her freshman year. Her average this season (.358) is the second best on the team as are her marks for home runs (12) and on-base percentage (.421). She is tops on the team in slugging percentage (.743). Her numbers also rank third in the conference in slugging and home runs, and seventh in hitting.
Home Run Rants - Utah has hit 40 home runs. Utah's single-season record for home runs is 65 set back in 2004 ... the Utes have homered in 24 games this season, going 16-7-1 in those games ... the Utes have hit four grand slams this season. Kara Foster has hit two of them while Hailey Davenport and Tori Medina have hit one ... the Utes have hit eight lead-off home runs this season. Hailey Davenport is tops in that category with five of them ... Kara Foster has hit three of the last five dingers ... 14 of the 39 homers have come with two outs on the board ... the Utes have hit 20 solo, 13 two-run, three three-run and four grand-slam home runs ... Utah has homered eight times in the third and sixth innings, respectively, more than any other inning thus far. Utah has hit six in the fifth and five in the seventh ... almost half (19-of-40) of the home runs have come in the last three innings.
Balls and Strikes - Utah is 1-6 versus teams mentioned in the national poll. It beat then-No. 17 Texas, 5-4, and lost to then-No. 8 Stanford, 5-2, then-No. 13 Texas A&M, 10-3, and then-No. 12 Washington, 3-1. Oregon, Hawaii and Fullerton were receiving votes in the national rankings and topped Utah, 6-0, 3-1 and 5-2 respectively ... the Utes are 2-1 in extra-inning games. They beat No. 17 Texas in 10 innings, 5-4, and San Diego State, 1-0, in 10 innings. It lost to UTEP, 3-2, in eight ... the Utes are 2-5 in one-run games, most recently beating San Diego State, 1-0, in 10 frames ... opponents have scored five or more runs on Utah only 12 times this year. The Utes are 2-0-1 in those outings ... Brigham Young's 11 runs in the second game last week are the most by a Ute opponent this season ... nearly half (45 percent of the team's RBI have come with two outs (65-of-144) ... the Utes hit .356 this year in the sixth inning, their best hitting in an inning by far this season. It's worst inning this year is the second, .240 ... Utah's batting average is .280 for the year. That number ups to .294 when there are runners on base. It's even higher (.393) when there's a runner on third and less than two outs ... Utah is 11-0 when it has 10 or more hits in a game ... Utah had a season-high 17 hits in the 12-4 win over Saint Mary's (3/31) ... the team has out-scored its opponents, 44-31, in innings six and seven combined ... Utah's biggest run differential is in the third inning where it has outscored its rivals, 28-7 ... the Utes are 18-1-1 when they score three or more runs. But, they are 2-16 when they score two or fewer.
Scouting the Opponents - New Mexico enters the week 12-14 overall and with a 2-1 mark in league action. It went 2-1 in play last weekend (beating UNLV and splitting with San Diego State), and that mark is good enough for third in the MWC. Five Lobo regulars hit better than .300, led Analise Rubalcava and her .343 average. Amy Ray's four home runs paces the team. In the circle, Kelly Ninemier (7-8, 4.02 ERA) is UNM's top thrower.
Colorado State enters the week with a 23-20 record and is in fourth place with a 2-2 league tally. The team went 2-2 last weekend, topping SDSU and dropping a pair to UNLV. The Rams feature three regulars who hit .300 or better. They are led by Allison Majam and her .376 batting average. Brittany Huerta leads the team with 10 homers. CSU's top hurler is Kim Klabough (8-7, 2.24 ERA).
Last Time Out - Brigham Young came to town and stole two league wins against Utah last weekend. The Cougars escaped town with 6-0 and 11-2 victories.
In game one, BYU broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with a pair of solo home runs. Jodi Norton and Andrea Ramirez gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead after four frames. Another solo homer in the fith and a two-run shot in the seventh gave BYU more than it needed in the 6-0 win. Utah only had three hits in the loss, all from three different Ute bats. Ute hurler Meghan Dyer was saddled with the loss.
A first-pitch home run gave BYU the 1-0 lead in game two as it ran away with an 11-2 win over Utah. In all, the Cougars had three home runs in the second game of the series, two from the bat of Norton. Cortney Clark was 3-for-5 with five RBI for the visitors. The lone highlight for the Utes was Hailey Davenport's solo home run in the fifth inning. It was her 12th on the season. Dyer was tagged with the loss.
