SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg is no stranger to international competition. He'll become even more familiar with it this summer.
Kinneberg has been named as the pitching coach for the USA Baseball National Team, as announced by USA Baseball recently. This will be Kinneberg's second stint as a coach for Team USA. He was also the USA Baseball National Team pitching coach in the summer of 1999. In addition to his stint with USA Baseball, Kinneberg was also the pitching coach for the Italian Olympic team in 1984.
"It is a tremendous honor to represent the United States and put that Team USA Uniform on," Kinneberg said. "I'm excited to be a part of the U.S. National Team and to be working with the elite players in the country."
Kinneberg's duties will begin June 17, when the team heads for the New England area for pre-tour training. Team USA will be taking part in training with the New England Collegiate Baseball League from June 19-24. They'll move to Cary, N.C. for more pre-tour training from June 26-28.
Games begin in late July, when the team will play a series vs. a yet-to-be-determined opponent in North Carolina. From July 4-9, Team USA will face off with Japan in Durham, N.C. According to Kinneberg the series with Japan is one of the more important portions of the summer.
"The U.S. and Japan have been playing a series for 40-some years," Kinneberg said. "It's the biggest series we play."
The most important competition of the summer follows the series with Japan. The National Team will head for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from July 14-19 to take part in the Pan American Games.
"It's the chance of a lifetime to coach in the Pan American Games," Kinneberg said.
Following the trip to Brazil, Team USA will return to the United States for a series with China. The National Team will return to Durham, N.C. for a short series with The Netherlands from July 28-30. The summer wraps up with a trip to Rotterdam, The Netherlands for the World Port Tournament.
"It will be a very demanding summer," Kinneberg said. "We're either playing or traveling almost every night. But it will be good competition and we'll be traveling to two foreign countries. I'm just very excited about the opportunity and proud to be representing my country."
The USA Baseball National Team head coach will be Long Beach State head coach Mike Weathers, who was the head coach at Utah from 1980-81. Mark Scalf of UNC-Wilmington and Rob Cooper of Wright State will also be assistant coaches on the staff.
"I've known Mike Weathers for a long time," Kinneberg said. "I'm looking forward to coaching with him this summer. We played UNC-Wilmington - Mark Scalf's club - two years ago. I'm looking forward to working with the other guys on the staff."
Kinneberg is in his fourth season as head coach of the Utes. He served for one season in 1996. Kinneberg has been in charge in the Utah dugout for the last three years in his second stint as head coach.
