On Deck - The University of Utah softball program (22-22-1, 2-10 Mountain West) wraps up its final road trip of the regular season when it play at Colorado State and New Mexico this weekend. The weekend begins with a doubleheader at CSU on May 3 at 1:30 p.m., and it concludes with a pair of single games at UNM on May 4-5. The dates against the Lobos begin at 3 p.m., and noon, respectively.
Quoting Head Coach Angie Jacobs:
On The Games This Week: "We are looking to make up some ground this weekend. With school behind us, the team is excited to get back on the field and to put up some victories in the win column."
On Last Weekend: "The scores at Brigham Young didn't reflect how well we played in both games. We have a young infield and sometimes our inexperience and lack of depth shows. But, we played well down there and we're dissapointed that we didn't come away with at least a split."
Nifty Fifty - Hailey Davenport has been the team's top hitter over the last five games. While she is hitting a not-too-shabby .372 for the season, the last five games has seen Davenport smack the ball around the park at an impressive .533 clip. Her 8-for-15 mark is tops on the team during that span as are her RBI (four), slugging percentage (.933) and on-base percentage (.588). Davenport also accounts for two of the team's six extra-base hits in the last five games. She has two homers, upping her season total to 14.
A "Second" Chance - Second baseman Kristie Keller came in to pitch two innings of relief work against Utah State. She tossed for two innings, holding the Aggies to two hits and striking out one batter. Her effort allowed the Utes win the pitchers' dual, 1-0, on Staci Hemingway's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
More Power - Both Hailey Davenport and Kara Foster are among the top power hitters in the conference. Davenport ranks second in slugging percentage (.744), third in homers (14), fourth in RBI (34) and fifth in batting (.372). Foster has posted similar numbers, ranking second in RBI (45) and home runs (15), and third in slugging (.692). The duo have hit 29 (62 percent) of the team's 47 homers and account for 48 percent (79-of-163) of the team's RBI.
Home Run Rants - Utah has hit 47 home runs. Utah's single-season record for home runs is 65 set back in 2004 ... the Utes have homered in 29 games this season, going 17-11-1 in those games ... the Utes have hit four grand slams this season. Kara Foster has hit two of them while Hailey Davenport and Tori Medina have hit one ... the Utes have hit 11 lead-off home runs this season. Hailey Davenport and Kara Foster have hit three each ... 16 of the 47 homers have come with two outs on the board ... the Utes have hit 24 solo, 15 two-run, four three-run and four grand-slam home runs ... Utah has homered 10 times in the third, more than any other inning thus far. The team has also homered nine times in the sixth inning Utah has hit six in each the first, fourth and fifth, and seventh ... almost half (21-of-47) of the home runs have come in the last three innings.
Balls and Strikes - Utah is 1-6 versus teams mentioned in the national poll. It beat then-No. 17 Texas, 5-4, and lost to then-No. 8 Stanford, 5-2, then-No. 13 Texas A&M, 10-3, and then-No. 12 Washington, 3-1. Oregon, Hawaii and Fullerton were receiving votes in the national rankings and topped Utah, 6-0, 3-1 and 5-2 respectively ... the Utes are 2-2 in extra-inning games. They beat No. 17 Texas in 10 innings, 5-4, and San Diego State, 1-0, in 10 innings. It lost to UTEP, 3-2, and BYU, 4-3, both in eight ... the Utes are 3-7 in one-run games, most recently falling to BYU, 4-3, in eight innings ... Utah is 19-2 when it scores first. It is 3-20-1 when opponents plate the first run of the game ... Colorado State's 20 runs in the second game two weeks ago are the most by a Ute opponent this season ... nearly half (44 percent) of the team's RBI have come with two outs (72-of-163) ... Hailey Davenport is the team's best leadoff hitter (.778). Diana Phillips is the best with runners on (.377) and with runners in scoring position (.417) ... Utah's batting average is .273 for the year. That number ups to .290 when there are runners on base. It's even higher (.412) when there's a runner on third and less than two outs ... Utah is 11-1 when it has 10 or more hits in a game. The first time it had 10-plus hits and lost was last weekend against BYU (game 2, 4-3 in eight innings) ... Utah had a season-high 17 hits in the 12-4 win over Saint Mary's (3/31) ... the Utes are 19-4-1 when they score three or more runs. But, they are 3-18 when they score two or fewer.
Scouting the Opponents - Colorado State is 26-25 overall and 5-7 in Mountain West Conference action. It went 2-2 last weekend, sweeping UNLV but getting swept by San Diego State. Utah and CSU met earlier this season and split the two-game series. Utah opened with an 8-4 win but dropped a 20-5 decision on April 20-21, respectively. Leading the Rams are Allison Majam (.364 hitting, .636 slugging) and Kim Klabough (2.55 ERA, 10-9).
New Mexico entered action this week with an 18-19 overall slate and a 7-5 league tally. The Lobos have won three of their last five but ended last weekend with a pair of losses to UNLV. This is the second meeting between Utah and UNM. UNM grabbed 3-1 and 6-5 wins when they first met in Salt Lake City on April 19. Leading the Lobos this year are Analise Rubalcava (.388, six home runs, 30 RBI), and Kelly Ninemire (3.62 ERA, 12-10).
Last Time Out - The Utes went 1-2 in action last week. They topped Utah State, 1-0, and lost a pair to in-state rival, Brigham Young, 8-0 and 4-3.
The week started off with a 1-0 win over Utah State. Utah broke up USU's no-hitter in the fifth, snapping the scoreless tie in the sixth. It was Staci Hemingway's sacrifice fly in the sixth frame that gave Utah all it needed. It scored Kelly Matthews. Second baseman Kristie Keller came on to pitch the final two innings, netting her first collegiate win.
BYU's Christie Zinanti hurled the Cougars to a pair of victories. She held Utah scoreless and allowed just three hits in bagging the 8-0 win in Friday's meeting. Diana Phillips had the most success against Zinanti, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
The second game saw BYU snag the 4-3 win in eight innings. The Utes out-hit their rivals, 10-6, and had a 2-1 lead after the top of the sixth. But, the Cougars tied it the bottom half of the frame. Both teams exchanged homers in the seventh, with Utah's Kara Foster going yard in the top of the stanza. BYU added a sacrifice fly in the eighth to escape with the one-run win.
Air Time - Select Mountain West Conference softball games will be televised on either CSTV or the mtn. this year. Utah's game at BYU (April 27) aired on CSTV while Utah's doubleheader at UNLV on April 5 was seen on the mtn. At the Helm - Head coach Angie Jacobs is in her first season as Utah's head coach. She brings eight years head coaching experience to the post, having guided the Miami University RedHawks during that time. She owns a 194-266-1 career record. Jacobs has 16 years of coaching experience, having been an assistant coach eight years prior to taking the helm at MU. Among her stops as assistant coach was a turn on the bench at Utah (1996-98). Her assistant coach is Debbie Bilbao.
In the Hole - The final weekend of play is on tap as Utah closes out the regular season with four home games. Utah will open play next week by hosting San Diego State in a doubleheader on May 10. The Utes then welcome UNLV to town with a pair of single games on May 11-12.
