Roster Set for USA National Team

DURHAM, NC - USA Baseball announced today the names of the final 9 members of the 2007 USA Baseball National Team. The players announced today, along with the 11 players previously announced, will form the 2007 USA Baseball National Team. Two of the players just completed their freshman season while the remaining 18 wrapped-up their sophomore campaign.
"It has been a challenging and exciting past 9 months as we identified and evaluated the top non-draft eligible collegiate players in the country for this program," said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager, National Teams. "We are very pleased with how the final roster has come together over the past couple of weeks, and it is always rewarding for our staff to see the strong mix of USA Baseball alumni who were selected."
Six of the players who have accepted invitations to join the 2007 USA Baseball National Team have previous international experience with the organization. Three of those players were members of the 2006 USA Baseball National Team including, Roger Kieshnick (OF, Texas Tech), whose selection was announced today, and Pedro Alvarez (IF, Vanderbilt) and Jemile Weeks (IF, Miami FL) who were announced in May. Other alumni joining Kieschnick, Alvarez and Weeks on the roster will be Danny Espinosa (2003 USA Baseball Youth National Team), Tommy Medica (2006 USA Baseball Junior National Team), and Tyson Ross (2004 and 2005 USA Baseball Junior National Teams).
"I'm really excited to get out there again. It's a great honor to play for USA Baseball, and I am looking forward to playing with a lot of other good players," said Danny Espinosa. "It feels great to put on the USA jersey. Nothing can explain playing for your country. Until you put on that jersey, you don't realize how much of an honor it is and how much pride you have behind you."
The 2007 USA Baseball National Team will open its season in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in preparation for four international series and two international events this summer. Team USA will play in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the World Port Tournament in The Netherlands. The USA Baseball National Team will also host the 36th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship Series and an Inaugural Friendship Series versus the Chinese National Team. The Chinese team is coached by Jim Lefebvre and Bruce Hurst.
In addition to Japan (who has never won a series on American soil), the national team will also play international powers from the Dominican Republic (July 14), Cuba (Aug, 6, 11), Nicaragua (July 15), Brazil (July 16) and the top European team, The Netherlands (July 28-30). Most teams will be using professional or minor league players while the USA National Team is touring with the top collegiate players in the country.
The USA Baseball National Team will be led by Long Beach State University Head Coach Mike Weathers who will be making his second coaching tour with the USA Baseball National Team. In his previous USA Baseball coaching assignment, Weathers was an assistant on the 2003 USA Baseball National Team which captured a silver medal at the 2003 Pan Am Games. Assisting Weathers on the 2007 USA Baseball National Team coaching staff will be Rob Cooper (Head Coach, Wright State), Bill Kinneberg (Head Coach, University of Utah), and Mark Scalf (Head Coach, UNC Wilmington). In addition, current Long Beach State University Baseball S.I.D. Niall Adler will serve as the 2007 USA Baseball National Team Press Officer.
"The Pan Am Games are just below the Olympic Games in terms of international competition and feel," Head Coach Mike Weathers said. "You have the Pan Am Village which all the countries live in together. It's a tremendous experience, and you're playing for medals - gold, silver and bronze - not just playing for a championship of a tournament. So the competition is as stern as it can be."
USA Baseball is the National Governing Body of amateur baseball in the United States and a member of the United States Olympic Committee. The organization selects and trains the USA Baseball National Team, the USA Baseball Junior National Team (18-under), the USA Baseball Youth National Team (16-under), the USA Baseball 14U National Team (14-under), and the USA Baseball Women's National Team which participate in various international competitions each year.
