SALT LAKE CITY - It may be the offseason for the University of Utah baseball team but several of its players are on display as members of summer league teams across the country.
Members of the Bellingham Bells of the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League, standout efforts by pitchers Stephen Fife and Greg Krause have landed the duo on the league's all-star team. Krause is 1-0 with 22 strikeouts in only 13.2 innings pitched, while Fife is 2-0 with an impressive 1.72 earned-run average. He is second on the team with 27 K's in only 31.1 innings of work. The all-star game is set for July 17.
Most recently, Fife was named the WCCBL's co-player of the week for July 2-8. He garnered the honor by tossing an eight-inning, four-hitter of a gem. The Bells went on to win that game, 2-0 over Kitsap, on July 3.
Hurler John James has also put up some impressive numbers as a member of the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League. He has made six appearances, five of which were starts. In 24.2 innings pitched, James has a 2.32 ERA and has 26 strikeouts. His opponents are batting just .215 when he's on the mound.
A bevy of Utes landed on the SoCal Fire as Jesse Shriner, Corey Shimada, Cody Guymon and incoming freshman Robert Chimpky played for the Western Baseball Association team. They guided the Fire to a 13-1, first-place finish in the Northern Division. The team went on to NBC World Series in Witchita, Kan., where they finished third in the nation, tying for the league's best national finish.
