PERTH, Australia - The University of Utah men's basketball team learned a lesson Saturday night. That lesson was that it can be difficult to play a foreign, professional team on its home turf. The Runnin' Utes learned it can be even more difficult to play that same team on back-to-back nights.
Hoping to build on Friday night's thrilling 97-96 victory, the Utes hung close for the first half Saturday, heading to the break down only two points. The second half was a different story as Perth's shooters were red hot and led the Wildcats to a 103-78 victory.
The Utes enjoyed a double-digit rebounding advantage, but 26 turnovers proved to be too much to overcome. Leading the way for the Utes was junior center Luke Nevill, who scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the second of two games played in his. Sophomore Stephen Weigh chipped in 16 points. Former Arizona State star Shawn Redhage led Perth with 27 points.
The Utes have an early morning flight to Sydney Sunday. The team will play the Australian Institute of Sport on Monday in Canberra and will follow that with a game against the NBL's West Sydney Razorbacks on Tuesday.
Game Notes:
- The Utes played in front of a capacity crowd for the second straight night, this time at Arena Joondalup in Perth.
- After committing 34 personal fouls in the first contest, the Utes finished with only 21 tonight.
- Following the game, the team stopped at the Nevill home to spend some time with Luke's family before heading back to the hotel.
- The Utes begin a stretch of three games in three days beginning on Monday against AIS.
Quotes From Head Coach Jim Boylen
On his team's effort:
"I thought our defensive effort at times was very good. We had some lapses because of poor communication. We need to continually improve our transition defense. I'm encouraged by our rebounding. We out-rebounded them by 12 on their home floor. Over the last two games we are averaging 15 offensive rebounds per game. The turnovers have been an issue. We need to take better care of the ball in late-clock situations and continue to adjust to the 24-second shot clock."
On Luke's final game in Perth:
"It was an honor for our team to be with Luke's family and to play in his hometown. It was important for our team to play well for him and for him to have success. Although we are disappointed in losing the second of two games in Perth, I think Luke had three halves (out of four) of very good basketball."
On the upcoming trip to Sydney:
"We're looking forward to getting to Sydney. We have an off day today (Sunday), which will be a chance to get away from basketball for a few hours and enjoy the city. It is going to be cool for me to go back to Sydney, as I went there once before as a coach at Michigan State."
On playing three games in three days:
"It will be a great opportunity to establish the mental toughness we will need to play in a tournament situation. We will be in that environment again. I'm interested to see how we'll respond."
