Well, the 21 hours of flying is over and done with, and the Utes have truly embarked on an adventure Down Under.
The first stop on the list was of course Perth, the hometown of our center Luke Nevill. The city of Perth is very beautiful. However, we didn't get much time to take in the sights, because before we knew it, we were off the plane and hitting the court to get ready for the big opening game against the Perth Wildcats the following evening. After practice came the team dinner, which was one of the quietest dinners of all time, thanks to "jet lag." Soon after, the entire team and staff were in bed for what has to be one of the best nights of sleep they would ever experience...and the time was only 8 pm.
The next day saw the team travel south to pay a visit to the aquarium in Perth. Inside we saw exactly what the Australian waters had to offer, including LB's favorite deep sea animal, the Grey Nurse shark (Warning! This animal is far scarier than its name suggests). While touring the aquarium we were fortunate enough the catch 'feeding time' and it was then that we suggested we pay Luke to have a fun little swim with the sharks. Of course this didn't happen.
Later that night we set off from the hotel to our first game against the Perth Wildcats. This game was very special to the entire team and coaching staff because not only was it the first game of the new-look Utes, but also it was to be played in front of Luke Nevill's friends and family, which of course meant a lot to Luke. It was safe to say that the game had a little bit of everything and the final result left nothing to be desired with the Utes winning by a narrow one-point margin. The Perth team was a very experienced outfit that proved deadly from the beyond the three-point line. Unfortunately for us, we experienced their great shooting the next night and ended up splitting the Perth leg of the Australian trip at 1-1.
Very early the next morning the team was repacked and ready for the five-hour flight to the east coast of Australia. We arrived in Sydney several hours later and enjoyed a bus tour of city, including the world-renowned Bondi Beach.
Unfortunately being winter, the water was far too cold to swim, so we settled for a photo and continued our tour of Sydney. That night was another early one for me as I found myself falling asleep to a good old game of cricket on TV.
At this very moment I am typing this entry on my way to Canberra where we will face up against my old team and many of my best mates, the Australian Institute of Sport (A.I.S). As a team, we will try and take the physical nature of the last two games and be the first to enforce it upon the A.I.S. in hopes that we can minimize their ability to get up and down the floor at a frantic pace. Personally, I am looking forward to the game and catching up with old teammates, coaches and friends, and also showing the boys where I spent three years of my life.
Well, that's more than enough from me for now. Until next time I'm Stevie Weigh saying 'cheers' (otherwise known as thank you).
