SYDNEY, Australia - Coming off of a disappointing defeat Monday afternoon, the University of Utah men's basketball team was back in action for the fourth time in five days Tuesday. Playing the NBL's West Sydney Razorbacks, the Runnin' Utes saw some improvement, but could not get the win, falling by a score of 102-88.
The two teams played nearly to a draw in the first half, with the Utes trailing by just two points at the break, 46-44. Utah hung around until late in the third quarter, when former New Mexico Lobo Troy DeVries heated up, helping to extend the West Sydney lead to eight points, going into the fourth quarter. The lead would eventually swell to 16, with the Utes getting as close as eight once more.
Utah again struggled with foul trouble, committing 32 personal fouls and sending West Sydney to the free throw line 37 times. After dominating the glass in their last two games, the Utes were out-rebounded 52-47.
Junior center Luke Nevill led the way for Utah with 26 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Senior guard Johnnie Bryant added 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting from three-point range. Kim Tillie tallied his second double-double of the trip with 11 points and 12 boards. DeVries and Darnell Hinson each scored 22 points for West Sydney.
The Utes will fly to Rockhampton early Wednesday morning and take on the Rockhampton Rockets of the Australian Basketball Association that evening.
Game Notes:
- The Utes practiced Tuesday morning before taking a brief stopover at the Sydney Opera House for pictures.
- Kim Tillie and Lawrence Borha each got starting nods Tuesday, replacing Luke Nevill and Curtis Eatmon in the lineup.
- The Utes were back to playing a 48-minute game after Monday's 40-minute contest against AIS.
- This was the second exhibition game for West Sydney in the last few days. The Razorbacks beat an American Athletes in Action team 128-93 on Saturday.
- The team will arrive in Stephen Weigh's hometown of Rockhampton around noon Wednesday and will play at 7 p.m. against the Rockhampton Rockets at Hegvold Stadium.
Quotes from Head Coach Jim Boylen On the team's effort Tuesday:
"I felt we were more focused defensively. I'm proud of the way we responded after having a contact practice this morning. Playing our fourth game in five days and holding a team to 40 percent shooting on their home floor is a baby step in the right direction."
On the decision to practice Tuesday morning:
"I didn't feel I could reward my team with extra time off after the lack of focus and effort displayed in our last game. We are trying to establish a level of toughness and accountability for what happens on the floor."
On starting Borha and Tillie:
"I felt Kim earned a chance to start, and he responded well with a double-double. He is playing with a sense of urgency and has been really focused on improving. LB has been our most consistent defender."
On Wednesday's travel and quick turnaround:
"This is what the trip is all about. We get off the plane and play a game. Whether we play five games in six days or whatever, the `Utah' on our chest is going to mean something. I don't want there to be any excuses."
