SALT LAKE CITY - The Univerity of Utah women's soccer team took a 1-0 exhibition victory over Weber State Saturday evening at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The contest was played prior to Real Salt Lake's Major League Soccer game with the Chicago Fire.
Utah grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute when freshman Erin Dalley (Centerville, Utah) scored off a corner kick. Ute senior Paola Marsenaro (Kearns, Utah) sent the corner kick in to freshman Lauren Hair (Alpine, Utah). Hair pushed it past Weber State goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie, setting Dalley up for an easy finish.
Utah's goalkeeping tandem of sophomore Lynzee Lee (Kalispell, Mont.) and sophomore Emalee Rogers (Centerville, Utah) teamed up for the shutout. Lee played the first half and recorded two saves. Rogers played the entire second half and notched a save.
Weber State had a few scoring chances late in the contest, but the Ute defense turned the Wildcats away to ice the victory.
Weber State out-shot Utah 12-6 in the contest. But both teams had three shots on goal.
"It was good to get out there and test ourselves against somebody else," Utah head coach Rich Manning said. "It gave us a chance to see where we're at and what we need to work on. I was pleased with our effort. We did some nice things in the first half. The lesson from the second half was clearly that we need to keep working on our fitness, so we can play a full 90 minutes."
Both the Utes and Wildcats took part in Carnival Real before the RLS-Chicago contest. The two teams also were honored for taking part in the U.S. Soccer Foundation Passback program at halftime of the MLS game. The two teams donated new and gently used soccer equipment, which will be given to schools, clubs and youth programs throughout the area.
The University of Utah women's soccer team opens the regular season August 31, when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. to face the University of Arizona.
