TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Utah women's soccer team opened the 2007 campaign with a 2-1 win over Arizona Friday night at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium.
Ute junior Katy Reineke scored Utah's first goal of the season in the 12th minute of the contest. Reineke pounded a free kick past Wildcat goalkeeper Devon Wharf from 30 yards away.
"Katy really picked up where she left off from last season with a very nice free kick," Utah head coach Rich Manning said.
Hermann Trophy Award candidate Adele Letro put the Utes up 2-0 early in the second half. The junior took a pass from freshman Lauren Hair and then hit a 12-yard chip shot from the right side. For Letro it was her 20th career goal.
Arizona's Karina Camacho made it interesting in the 79th minute, when she got a point-blank shot on the Utah goal and made it count. But that was the only goal sophomore goalkeeper Lyzee Lee and the Ute defense would allow.
"I thought Amanda Sanchez played very well in her first game back after missing last season," Manning said. "Amanda and Morgan Skeen did a really nice job in the center of the defense and played a good game. Kiley Jones was her usual steady self and helped us form a good base in the middle."
Utah was out-shot by Arizona 8-5. But the Utes converted their only two shots on goal. The Wildcats had four shots on goal, but only mustered one goal.
Manning was happy his team picked up a season-opening victory, but said there is improvement to be made.
"At times it really looked like a first game," Manning said. "We have a lot we can work on. But we did some terrific things as well. Obviously, getting the result is great. Arizona is a great team and hopefully this getting this experience will serve us well."
Utah will see action again Sunday, when they travel to Long Beach State for a 9 a.m. PDT kickoff.
