SALT LAKE CITY - University of Utah head baseball coach Bill Kinneberg has announced the addition of Bryan Kinneberg and Nate Schlieman to the program's coaching staff. Bryan Kinneberg joins the Utes after spending the last two seasons on the Oklahoma State coaching staff. Schlieman, a former catcher for the Utes from 2003-04, returns to Utah after coaching last season at Augsburg College (Minn.).
"We feel like Bryan is a young, up-and-coming college baseball coach and we are fortunate to have him on our coaching staff," said Bill Kinneberg. "While I have not had the chance to work with Nate, (current assistant) Bryan Conger and other co-workers speak of him highly. So, it was easy to ask him to come back and we're excited to have him working in our program."
Bryan Kinneberg will be in charge of hitting. Schleiman will oversee the catchers and the outfielders. He will assist with the hitters as well.
Bryan Kinneberg comes to the Utes after a two-year stint at Oklahoma State as its volunteer assistant coach. At OSU, he assisted with the hitters and infielders and coached first base. The Cowboys led the Big 12 in nearly every offensive statistical category in 2007, including batting average (.319), doubles (144), home runs (86) and slugging (.518). In addition, the team fielded at an impressive .971 clip.
While on staff, Bryan Kinneberg saw the team make two postseason appearances. In 2007, the Cowboys were one win away from the College World Series, falling to Louisville in the third game of the Super Regional. OSU went 83-41 while Kinneberg was on staff, and had a school record 11 players taken in the MLB draft in 2007.
As a player, Bryan Kinneberg played for Phoenix College in Peoria, Ariz. He was an all-district player there, ranking among the league's best hitters. Kinneberg finished his playing career at North Carolina State where he helped the Wolfpack to two NCAA Tourney showings. He graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in philosophy.
Schlieman, who played at Utah from 2003-04, spent last year as an assistant coach at Augsburg College. There, he was in charge of hitters, catchers and baserunners, and saw his Auggies lead the league in stolen bases in 2007.
Prior to Schlieman's stint with Augsburg, he was an assistant coach at his high school alma mater (Burnsville HS, Minn.), and was the head coach of the Burnsville Junior Legion team. He mentored his 16-year-old legion squad to three consecutive state titles and earned a Legion World Series berth in 2006.
Schlieman, a native of Burnsville, Minn., graduated from Utah in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in exercise and sports science.
Preparations for the 2008 season got under way on Aug. 27 when the team reported for individual workouts. Team workouts begin Sept. 12 and end with the "Fall World Series" on Oct. 22-26.
