SALT LAKE CITY -- Utah lost heralded running back Matt Asiata for the season after the junior college transfer broke his right leg in the first quarter of Thursday's game at Oregon State. Asiata, who will undergo surgery today to repair a broken tibia and fibula, does have a redshirt year available. Preseason all-conference quarterback Brian Johnson separated his right (throwing) shoulder late in the first half and is expected to miss the next 3-5 weeks. Linebacker Matt Martinez tore his right ACL in the game and is out for the season. Injured in practice the week of the game was tight end Colt Sampson. He has an MCL sprain to his left knee and is out for approximately four weeks.
Asiata averaged 4.0 yards per rush on four carries before the injury, with a long run of nine yards. The end of his season means the Utes will pull Darrell Mack out of a planned redshirt year. Indications are that Ray Stowers will start against Air Force next Saturday. Darryl Poston will also play at running back.
Johnson had completed 8-of-13 passes for 119 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brent Casteel that gave Utah a 7-0 lead in the second quarter. Tommy Grady took every snap when Johnson went down near the end of the second half. Grady will get his first collegiate start next Saturday against Air Force.
