SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (67) posted a 6-1 win over the Weber State Wildcats on Saturday. After the lengthy doubles competition, which ended in Utah's favor, the Utes stepped up their game to finish strong.

The Utes struggled in the beginning of doubles play, but managed the doubles point after wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin took on Spencer Marchant and Travis Covington at the No. 3 spot for an 8-3 winning performance. At the top spot, Zach Ganger and Miron Mann faced Sascha Kiehne and Fabio Mancarella. The Wildcats kept pushing, determined for the win, but the Ute duo held strong to pull out a 9-7 victory.

In singles play, Hancock finished with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the No. 3 spot over Kienhe. Allin took on Chris Williams at the No. 6 slot for a 6-0, 6-4 victory to edge the Utes to 3-0. Playing at the top spots on Saturday morning was Ganger and Weber State's Henning Hipp. The Ute got into his groove to shut down Hipp at 6-4, 6-2.

Jason Smits represented Utah at the No. 4 slot against Nick Plum from the Wildcats. The Ute took the match at 6-2, 6-4 to advance the Utes to 5-0. Finishing out the day for the Utes was Stephen Jacobs at the No. 6 slot. The Ute slid by in the first set at 7-6(6) over Marchant from Weber State. Stepping up his game and energy in the second set, Jacobs shut down the Wildcat at 7-6(6), 6-4.

"Weber State gave us a good run for our money, especially in doubles. We started the match off a little tenative and we allowed Weber to get in the match. After getting the doubles point, our guys relaxed and started playing without fear," said assistant coach Roeland Brateanu. "This was the first regular dual match of the season and you could definitely tell that some guys still need to get their rythem. It was good to see the guys work hard and compete hard. We now need to prepare for our evening match against Utah State and get a second win under our belt."
